The Houston Astros jumped out to a healthy division lead in the American League West with their sights set on the playoffs. But a second half slump cost them the division, the wild card and a shot at the playoffs.
The Astros suffered from devastating injuries in a year without a margin for error. But 2026 is a new year. Their lineup is healthy and this team has its sights trained on redemption in what promises to be another competitive year in the AL West.

Houston Astros 2025 Performance
The Houston Astros fell short of the postseason in 2025, finishing three games out of a playoff spot. They jumped out to a strong record in the first half, but ultimately injuries to key players — namely, Yordan Alvarez and Christian Javier — cost them a trip to the postseason in a highly competitive American League West.
The Astros went just 31-35 in the second half with their offense falling off a cliff. Alvarez missing more than 100 games certainly did not help. But for this Houston team, there was no room for error.
That doesn’t mean there weren’t bright spots for the Astros.
Hunter Brown had a great season on the mound, going 12-9 with a 2.43 ERA. He finished third in the AL Cy Young race. Jeremy Peña was named to the All-Star team with his best season at the plate thus far. He also cut his errors in half.
Isaac Paredes, in his first season with Houston, was named to his second All-Star team before missing two months with an injury. Yainer Diaz hit 20 home runs and 25 doubles from behind the plate.
Carlos Correa returned to Houston and delivered in the second half. But the injuries were just enough to lose their grip on the division title and ultimately a postseason berth.

Houston Astros Players to Watch in 2026
Yordan Alvarez – DH/LF
Alvarez missed all but 48 games in 2025, and the Astros sorely missed their best hitter. In the second half, he showed just how much of a difference he can make with four doubles, three home runs, and a ridiculous 1.031 OPS in 19 games. He is one of the best hitters in baseball. This Astros are a World Series contender with him in the middle of their lineup
Hunter Brown – SP
Brown finished third in last year’s Cy Young race and was unhittable at stretches throughout the season. The 26-year-old made his first All-Star team and set career highs in wins, ERA, innings pitched and strikeouts. He is every bit the ace that the Astros need atop their rotation.
Jeremy Peña – SS
Peña made his first All-Star team and finished 10th in MVP voting in 2025. A pair of injuries at the end cost him a chance at powering the Astros into the playoffs. But Peña is finally delivering on his potential and looking like the consistent difference-maker the Astros hoped he’d be.
Isaac Paredes 3B/INF
Paredes had a dominant first half with 19 home runs in the first 94 games, but suffered a hamstring injury in mid-July that cost him the next two months. With the addition of Carlos Correa, Paredes could find himself as a trade candidate for the Astros to add to their rotation.
Carlos Correa – 3B/INF
Correa returned to the Astros at the deadline last year due to the injury to Isaac Paredes. In 51 games, Correa looked like his old self with six home runs, 10 doubles, and 21 RBIs in the last two months. The familiar confines of Houston makes Correa another reliable source of power for this Houston squad.
Zach Cole – LF
Zach Cole got the call-up in September and went 3-4 with four RBIs and a home run on the first pitch he saw in the big leagues. He’ll look to get the start in left field, with the other outfielders still to be determined.
Cam Smith – RF
Cam Smith was a highly touted prospect coming into last season. While he didn’t quite deliver what some thought, he finished 10th in the Rookie of the Year voting. Smith will look to bounce back in his second season and try to provide power at the other corner outfield spot.
Houston Astros Key Games & Rivalries in 2026
Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers
The Lone Star Series is in its 25th season between the Astros and the Rangers, one of baseball’s most competitive rivalries. They’ve met 299 times since June 8, 2001, and the Rangers just barely lead the series 150-149.
Last season, Houston won the season series 7-6 with a run differential of just seven across those 13 games. With Texas’ pitching remaining its strength, this series will be just as competitive as it was a year ago.
The Astros face the Rangers 10 times before the All Star break.
- May 15 – May 17: Three-game series in Houston
- May 25 – May 28: Four-game series in Arlington
- July 10 – July 12: Three-game series in Arlington
Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners
The Astros-Mariners rivalry has nothing to do with proximity and everything to do with competition. The Mariners usurped the Astros last season to claim the AL West crown. Houston went 5-8 against the Mariners with a run differential of one across those 13 games.
Houston gets their first chance to exact vengeance against Seattle in the opening weeks of the season:
- April 10 – April 13: Four-game series in Seattle
- May 11 – May 14: Four-game series in Houston
The rest of their season series will be in the thick of the playoff race.
