Toronto Tempo Expansion History

The Toronto Tempo officially joined the WNBA on Dec. 5, 2024, becoming the league’s first franchise located outside the United States. The expansion team begins play in 2026 as part of the WNBA’s continued international growth and expansion into Canada.

The Tempo are owned by Kilmer Sports Ventures and Larry Tanenbaum, with additional ownership involvement from Serena Williams, Lilly Singh, Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, Jeff Molson and former Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri.

Toronto will primarily play home games at Coca-Cola Coliseum while also hosting select regular season games in Vancouver and Montreal as part of a nationwide effort to grow women’s basketball across Canada.

The franchise hired longtime WNBA coach Sandy Brondello to lead the team and built its inaugural roster around veterans Brittney Sykes, Marina Mabrey and Julie Allemand before selecting UCLA star Kiki Rice in the 2026 WNBA Draft.

Key Toronto Tempo Players to Watch In 2026

The Toronto Tempo begin their inaugural WNBA season with a roster built around veteran leadership and young talent acquired through the expansion draft and the 2026 WNBA Draft. Brittney Sykes, Marina Mabrey and Julie Allemand headline the roster, while rookie Kiki Rice arrives as the franchise’s first-ever draft selection.

Kiki Rice

Rice was selected to become the face of the Tempo franchise after helping lead UCLA to a national championship. The versatile guard averaged 13.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game during her final college season and enters the WNBA as one of the most accomplished guards in the 2026 draft class.

Brittney Sykes

Sykes brings veteran scoring, defense and leadership to Toronto after averaging 14.1 points and four assists per game last season between Washington and Seattle. As one of the Tempo’s most experienced players, she will play a major role in helping establish the identity of the expansion franchise.

Marina Mabrey

Mabrey gives Toronto another experienced perimeter scorer after averaging 14.4 points and four assists per game with Connecticut in 2025. Her shot creation and playmaking should help stabilize the Tempo offense early in the season.

Julie Allemand

Allemand was the first player selected by Toronto in the expansion draft and arrives with extensive international experience. The Belgian guard averaged five assists per game during her WNBA career and recorded the first triple-double of her career during the 2025 season.

Nyara Sabally

Sabally enters a larger opportunity in Toronto after struggling to carve out a consistent role with the Liberty. The former first-round pick remains one of the Tempo’s most intriguing developmental players because of her rebounding, interior defense and offensive upside.

With a mix of proven veterans and promising young talent, Toronto enters its first WNBA season focused on building chemistry and establishing a foundation for the future.
