Boston Red Sox (82-70) at Texas Rangers (76-76) — Game Preview

The Boston Red Sox arrive at Globe Life Field with an 82-70 record to face a Texas Rangers club that sits at 76-76 this season. Boston’s pitching staff has been the sharper unit all year, carrying a 3.61 team ERA against a 4.30 mark for Texas, even as the two lineups have hit for nearly identical power, 157 home runs for the Red Sox against 173 for the Rangers. Willson Contreras has anchored the Boston attack from first base, hitting .275 with 27 home runs and 81 RBIs this season.

Jarren Duran gives the Red Sox a different look entirely, pairing 20 home runs with 19 stolen bases and a .360 slugging percentage out of the outfield. On the Texas side, Ezequiel Duran has put together the most balanced batting line in the infield, hitting .270 with a .331 on-base percentage and a .439 slugging mark, while Jake Burger has driven in 84 runs to go with 26 home runs and a .234 average in the middle of the order. Even at 76-76, the Rangers sit atop the American League West, leaving them no ground to make up in a division that has yet to produce a runaway favorite this season.

Players to Watch: Boston Red Sox vs. Texas Rangers

Boston Red Sox

Willson Contreras — 1B. Contreras is hitting .275 with 27 home runs and 81 RBIs this season, a power and average combination that has made him a fixture in the middle of Boston’s lineup. That kind of run production out of the infield gives the Red Sox a consistent threat regardless of who is on the mound.

Jarren Duran — LF. Duran brings a different skill set to the table, pairing 20 home runs with 19 stolen bases this season. His .360 slugging percentage and .260 on-base mark point to a player who does his damage in the extra-base and stolen-base columns rather than at the top of the batting average leaderboard.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa — 2B. Rounding out the group is Kiner-Falefa, more of a table-setter at .262 with a .338 on-base percentage. His .340 slugging mark is modest by comparison, but his ability to get on base keeps the line moving in front of Boston’s power bats.

Texas Rangers

Ezequiel Duran — SS. Duran is hitting .270 with a .331 on-base percentage and a .439 slugging mark, the most balanced batting line in the Texas infield this season. That all-around production has made him one of the steadier bats for a Rangers club still finding consistency.

Jake Burger — 1B. Burger has driven in 84 runs to go with 26 home runs and a .234 average this season. His RBI total has made him one of the more productive bats in a Rangers lineup that has otherwise been up and down.

Corey Seager — SS. In 92 games this season, Seager has racked up 18 home runs, 46 RBIs and a .436 slugging percentage. His .326 on-base percentage and pull-side power give Texas another dimension in the middle of the lineup.
