It was a thrilling, hard-fought season for the Cleveland Guardians in 2025. After more than 15 games out of first place in the AL Central at the beginning of July, the Guardians roared back in the second half thanks to a dominant September to claim the division and reach the postseason.
Their season ended soon after, but for a team that is largely still intact, it was a confidence-building experience that they will look to carry into the 2026 season.
Let’s take a look at what went well last year, what didn’t and what 2026 holds in store.

How Did the Guardians Do in 2025?
On July 8, 2025, the Cleveland Guardians were 15.5 games back of the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. As they closed out the last game of the season, they were one game up. Cleveland ripped off a 20-7 September including five wins against the Tigers to pull off the improbable division comeback.
They carried their fight into yet another series with the Tigers in the Wild Card round of the playoffs but ultimately fell in three games.
José Ramírez put together another stellar season. He hit 30 home runs, stole 44 bases, made his seventh All-Star team and finished top five in MVP voting for the fourth time in the last six seasons.
Overall, it was a good season for Cleveland. Steven Kwan put together an All-Star and Gold Glove campaign. Kyle Manzardo hit 27 home runs in his first full season. Gavin Williams won 12 games with a 3.06 ERA.
The major negative was the gambling scandal that involved Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz. Clase was one of the league’s best closers and his absence is still felt in the bullpen.

Top Guardians to Watch
For Cleveland, the success of their year starts with the success of their star: José Ramírez. A perennial MVP finalist, Ramírez is one of the few consistent power sources for this offense.
Steven Kwan had an All-Star first half of the season but faded down the stretch. Cleveland needs him back to that early season form.
Tanner Bibee and Gavin Williams have shown flashes of a dominant one-two punch at the top of the pitching rotation and Cleveland will hope they can put it together in 2026.
The rest of the Guardians to watch are young players looking to take the next step forward. Manzardo was second on the team in home runs, but struggled with consistency. Bo Naylor had a great season behind the plate, but hit just .195 on the year.
As for prospects, outfielder Chase DeLauter and second baseman Travis Bazzana are among MLB’s top 50 propects and they will both be looking to compete for roster spots early in the season.
Cleveland Guardians Key Games in 2026
Cleveland’s playoff appearance came down to the last few weeks of the season, and looking at the American Landscape, they seem destined for another dog fight in their division and into the postseason race.
Their season starts at full speed. Their first three opponents — the Mariners, Dodgers and Cubs — were all playoff teams a year ago.
And they have 11 games against division opponents before May is over.
Key Series
- Apr 6-8: vs Kansas City Royals
