New York Yankees (61-48) at Chicago Cubs (62-47) — Game Preview

The New York Yankees (61-48) visit the Chicago Cubs (62-47) at Wrigley Field on July 31, 2026. New York’s pitching staff has been the sharper of the two so far this season, posting a 3.36 team ERA against Chicago’s 4.15. Ben Rice has carried much of the offensive weight for the Yankees, batting .269 with 31 home runs and 73 RBIs from first base, and he faces a Cubs lineup fronted by Pete Crow-Armstrong, who is hitting .285 with 24 home runs and a .541 slugging percentage in center field.

Crow-Armstrong’s .382 on-base percentage also outpaces Rice’s .359 mark, giving Chicago an edge in getting runners on ahead of the middle of the order. Seiya Suzuki adds another power bat for the Cubs, hitting .270 with 18 home runs and 60 RBIs, while Anthony Volpe brings speed and contact to New York’s infield with a .248 average and seven stolen bases. The Yankees are doing their damage without Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger, all sidelined by injury, leaving Rice and Jasson Domínguez to shoulder more of the load in the middle of the order.

Players to Watch: New York Yankees vs. Chicago Cubs

New York Yankees

Ben Rice — 1B. Rice has emerged as the engine of New York’s lineup this season, batting .269 with 31 home runs and 73 RBIs from first base. His .572 slugging percentage pairs with a .359 on-base percentage, making him one of the more complete power threats on the roster.

Manning shortstop for the Yankees, Anthony Volpe brings a different look to the lineup, hitting .248 with a .335 on-base percentage and seven stolen bases. His game leans on contact and speed rather than power, reflected in a .333 slugging percentage that sits well below Rice’s .572 mark this season.

Rounding out the outfield picture, Jasson Domínguez has flashed extra-base pop in right field, going deep six times with 11 doubles and a .389 slugging percentage. He is still working to raise a .232 batting average, but his .272 on-base percentage and seven stolen bases give New York’s order some added versatility.

Chicago Cubs

Pete Crow-Armstrong — CF. Crow-Armstrong has been Chicago’s most complete offensive weapon this season, hitting .285 with 24 home runs, 63 RBIs and a .541 slugging percentage from center field. His .382 on-base percentage ranks among the best on the roster, making him a threat in every at-bat.

Playing right field alongside Crow-Armstrong, Seiya Suzuki gives the Cubs a second legitimate power source, batting .270 with 18 home runs, 60 RBIs and a .474 slugging percentage. His run production keeps pace with Crow-Armstrong’s own 63 RBIs, giving Chicago two genuine power sources in the middle of the order.

At the top of the order, Nico Hoerner sets the table for Chicago’s bigger bats, hitting .257 with a .320 on-base percentage and 16 stolen bases. He has also chipped in five home runs and 50 RBIs from second base, showing more pop than his table-setting role might suggest.
