Houston Astros (65-66) at New York Yankees (74-56) — Game Preview
The Houston Astros (65-66) visit Yankee Stadium to face the New York Yankees (74-56), a matchup between two American League clubs still jockeying for playoff position in the season’s final stretch. New York’s pitching staff has been the more reliable of the two all year, running a 3.20 team ERA against Houston’s 4.63 mark, while the Astros have hit for a better team average at .242 to the Yankees’ .230. Yordan Alvarez has carried Houston’s offense all season, hitting .320 with 36 home runs and 90 RBIs as the Astros’ primary power threat, and his .613 slugging percentage means he can change a game with one swing.
Christian Walker gives Houston a second source of thump further down the order, adding 23 home runs and 72 RBIs at first base. For the Yankees, Ben Rice has answered with 34 home runs and 82 RBIs from the DH spot, and Luis García Jr. has been just as productive at first base, hitting .277 with 26 home runs and 82 RBIs of his own.

Players to Watch: Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees
Houston Astros
Yordan Alvarez — DH. Alvarez has been the most dangerous bat in Houston’s lineup all season, hitting .320 with 36 home runs and 90 RBIs from the designated hitter spot. His .436 on-base percentage and .613 slugging percentage both stand out on the Astros’ roster, and pitchers around the league have learned to be careful with anything close to the strike zone.
Christian Walker — 1B. Twenty-three home runs and 72 RBIs make Walker the Astros’ primary complement to Alvarez in the middle of the order. He is hitting .233 with a .438 slugging percentage, numbers that reflect a hitter who does his damage in bunches rather than by hitting for a high average.
Jeremy Peña — SS. At shortstop, Peña brings the highest average in Houston’s regular lineup, hitting .284 with 14 home runs and 41 RBIs. His .469 slugging percentage shows he’s more than just a table setter, capable of driving the ball into the gaps when the Astros need a spark.
New York Yankees
Cody Bellinger — LF. Bellinger gives the Yankees steady contact from left field, hitting .259 with a .349 on-base percentage this season. His .418 slugging percentage adds enough pop to keep him in the middle of a lineup that leans on production up and down the order.
Ben Rice — DH. Thirty-four home runs and 82 RBIs put Rice among the most productive bats in New York’s lineup this season. His .249 average trails behind those counting stats, a sign he’s built more for extra-base damage than for hitting for average.
Luis García Jr. — 1B. At first base, García gives the Yankees another source of thump in the middle of the order, hitting .277 with 26 home runs and 82 RBIs. His .542 slugging percentage adds to a lineup already built around extra-base power.
