Players to Watch: Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres

Arizona Diamondbacks

Ketel Marte — 2B. Marte has been the engine of Arizona’s offense this season, hitting .266 with 17 home runs and 54 RBIs at second base. His .482 slugging percentage gives the Diamondbacks a legitimate power threat in the middle of the lineup, and his .323 on-base percentage keeps him in position to score whenever the long ball connects. Right fielder Corbin Carroll is the only other Diamondback within shouting distance of his power numbers, with 13 home runs of his own.

Corbin Carroll — RF. Carroll pairs power with speed in right field, hitting .261 with 13 home runs and 45 RBIs. His .497 slugging percentage points to real pop to go with his speed on the bases, giving the Diamondbacks a dynamic bat outside the middle infield.

Gabriel Moreno — C. Moreno gives the Diamondbacks steady contact from behind the plate, hitting .294 with a .377 on-base percentage and a .434 slugging mark. That kind of on-base ability is rare production from a catcher in the middle of a lineup built around power bats like Marte and Carroll.

San Diego Padres

Fernando Tatis Jr. — RF. Tatis is hitting .284 with a .345 on-base percentage patrolling right field for the Padres this season. His .385 slugging percentage shows a hitter who works counts and finds the barrel more often than not, giving San Diego a steady presence at the top of the lineup.

Gavin Sheets — 1B. Sheets supplies the power in San Diego’s lineup, hitting 14 home runs and driving in 39 runs from first base. His .441 slugging percentage points to a hitter capable of changing a game with one swing, even with a .230 average that still has room to climb.

Jackson Merrill — CF. Merrill roams center field for the Padres and has chipped in 10 home runs and 37 RBIs of his own this season. The young outfielder’s .357 slugging percentage suggests untapped upside as he continues to develop into an everyday piece of San Diego’s outfield.
