Aging actress Helen Walbridge (Verree Teasdale) has managed to keep her daughter a secret, concealed at a boarding school her whole life. When the daughter, Lois (Jean Muir), now an adult, shows up at Helen's apartment, she meets Stuart "Mac" McAllister (George Brent), Helen's companion. Lois and Mac strike up a friendship, and Mac convinces Helen to reveal her daughter to the public. Lois struggles with this new attention, while Mac realizes he's falling for the young woman.
