TLOU Finale Recap: ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2, Episode 7

If there’s one takeaway from the Season 2 finale of The Last of Us, it’s that while the physical threats in this world are many, revenge is its most damning villain — and Ellie is firmly caught in its grasp. Throughout the season, we’ve watched her sacrifice love, safety and sanity in the name of justice for Joel’s death. “Convergence” shows us just how far she’s willing to go, and the price she’ll pay to get it.

The episode begins in the quiet of the Pinnacle Theater, the group’s base. Dina, still recovering from a Seraphite attack, is being tended to by Jesse when Ellie returns, bruised and visibly shaken from her confrontation with Nora. Dina pushes through her own pain to care for Ellie, creating a rare moment of tenderness. As Dina tends to Ellie’s wounds, Ellie makes a chilling: how she tortured Nora for information and how terrifyingly easy it was: “I thought it would be harder to do.”

That moment of intimacy leads to an even deeper confession: Ellie finally tells Dina what Joel did in Salt Lake City, and how she figured it out. For Dina — pregnant, wounded and emotionally fried — it’s overwhelming.

Still, Dina pleads with Ellie to let go of her mission. “This has gone too far,” she says, urging her to think about the baby and all they’ve already lost. But Ellie is far past the point of no return. Her rage, and her grief, have clouded everything. The expression on Dina’s face says it all: she no longer believes Ellie can be saved from herself.

The Bookstore Rendezvous: A Fork in the Road

Jesse and Ellie head out to meet Tommy at the bookstore – their designated rendezvous location – with Jesse eager to escape Seattle. We know, of course, Ellie is all too reluctant to leave, providing Jesse with plenty of excuses – and sarcasm.

Along the way, they spot a Seraphite being overwhelmed by six WLF soldiers. Ellie instinctively prepares to jump in (viewers know Ellie’s “fight or flight” instincts almost always ends in “fight”), her PTSD flaring from her own captivity, but Jesse pulls her back, his concern and frustration palpable.

Over at the Aquarium, WLF leader Isaac and lieutenant Elise are finalizing their battle plans for an upcoming attack of the Seraphites’ island. Isaac is clearly worried when he learns Abby has been missing for the last three days – coincidentally the same amount of time Ellie has been in Seattle. The fact that a leader as ruthless and cunning as Isaac is worried about Abby shows us just how important Abby is to the group: she is more than just a soldier; she is the future of the WLF.

Back at the bookstore, Tommy is missing, but Jesse and Ellie intercept WLF chatter about a sniper nearby, who the pair infer to be Tommy. Ellie spots the Ferris wheel and realizes Abby must be hiding in the flooded aquarium nearby. Considering Ellie’s relentless urge for revenge, it shouldn’t be a shock – but nonetheless is – when she decides to forgo the mission to find Tommy to gain ground on Abby. It’s a choice that visibly devastates Jesse.

Ellie Goes Rogue

As a storm batters the shoreline, Ellie steals a boat and heads toward the aquarium. It’s clear this is a dead-end mission—one Ellie might abandon if her judgment weren’t so clouded by rage. She’s eventually capsized and captured by the Seraphites. Bound and moments from being gutted, Ellie is saved when an alarm diverts her captors. Even with death looming, she can’t let go.

You’d think after yet another near-death experience, Ellie would count her blessings and back off, but the sunk-cost fallacy is in full swing here.

She successfully makes her way over to the aquarium to find Mel and Owen, two of Abby’s friends. At gun point she demands information about Abby’s whereabouts, ending with her shooting Owen dead and Mel in the neck. As she bleeds out, we see one of the most emotionally devastating moments of the episode – Mel is pregnant.

Even this – the death of a pregnant woman by her own hands and its similarities to the dangers faced by her love, Dina – is not enough to stem Ellie’s drive to get to Abby.

Jesse and Tommy eventually find Ellie amidst the bloodshed and drag her back to the theater. For a moment, it seems like Ellie might finally go home—but this is The Last of Us, and peace never lasts.

Abby & Ellie Meet: A Final Reckoning

Just as things begin to settle, Abby storms the theater. In a flash of violence, Jesse is gunned down, Tommy is wounded and Ellie is cornered. With cold fury, Abby says the words fans of the game know well: “You… I let you live. And you wasted it.” A gunshot follows and the screen cuts to black.

The Final Scene: Abby’s Side of the Story

The final moments flash back to Day One, reflecting the same timeline Ellie and Dina followed throughout the season. Now we follow Abby, standing in the middle of a repurposed Seattle stadium, the WLF’s stronghold. The scene shows just how much force the WLF has, and it reaffirms the naivety of Ellie and Dina for thinking this was something they could handle on their own. Speaking briefly with Manny, Abby prepares for the conflict ahead. The season ends not with closure, but with perspective, setting up Season 3 to tell the other side of the story.

Final Thoughts: The Cost of Revenge

“Convergence” brings The Last of Us Season 2 to a devastating, yet thematically rich conclusion. While we’re led to believe Ellie survives her final confrontation with Abby (as she plays a major role in the latter part of The Last of Us Part II) she emerges more emotionally lost than ever. Her quest for revenge has come at an irreparable cost: Jesse is dead, Tommy is wounded and her relationship with Dina is on the verge of collapse.

The finale reminds us that in this world, survival doesn’t mean victory, and revenge will never undo the past. Instead, it corrupts and isolates. As we prepare for what comes next, it’s clear that Ellie’s emotional arc is far from over—and that the story may challenge us to reconsider everything we thought we knew about heroes and villains.

‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Finale Easter Eggs

Curious how closely the finale follows The Last of Us Part II? Here are five major Easter eggs from Episode 7 that fans of the game will appreciate:

  1. “You wasted it”
Abby’s final line to Ellie, “You… I let you live, and you wasted it,” is pulled directly from the video game’s theater showdown, one of the most memorable moments of Part II.
  2. Salt Lake City Confession
In the game, Ellie records a journal entry reflecting on Joel’s actions at the Firefly hospital. In the show, this revelation is shared aloud with Dina, offering a more emotionally intimate exchange.
  3. The Aquarium Recreation
The aquarium hideout is a near-perfect replica of the in-game location, down to small environmental details like stuffed seals, murals and children’s artwork.
  4. The Ferris Wheel
The distant shot of the Seattle Ferris wheel mirrors a key visual from the game’s promotional art and serves as a visual cue for Abby’s location.
  5. Day One Flashback
The finale ends by rewinding to Abby’s Day One, a storytelling structure lifted from the game, setting up Season 3 to mirror the second half of the game’s dual perspective format.

What to Expect from Season 3 of ‘The Last of Us’

With the Season 2 finale closing on Abby’s perspective, The Last of Us Season 3 is expected to retell the events of Seattle’s three-day arc from her point of view—just as the game did. This bold narrative shift will allow viewers to experience Abby’s motivations, losses and growth in parallel to Ellie’s, offering a deeper emotional contrast between the two leads.

Season 3 will also introduce Lev, a fan-favorite character from the game, and explore the escalating war between the WLF and the Seraphites. HBO Max has not officially announced a premiere date, but showrunner Craig Mazin has confirmed that the remaining story may span multiple seasons to preserve the depth and pacing of the game’s second half. With production underway, fans can expect another emotionally intense chapter; one that redefines what justice, loyalty, and redemption mean in a world reeling from violence.
