LA Dodgers (69-45) at Chicago Cubs (65-49) — Game Preview

The Dodgers bring a 69-45 record into Wrigley Field to face a Chicago Cubs team sitting at 65-49 for an afternoon game on the North Side. Los Angeles has been the sharper run-prevention club with a 3.71 team ERA against Chicago’s 4.06, while the two lineups sit closer together in power with 146 home runs for the Dodgers and 141 for the Cubs. Freddie Freeman is hitting .310 with a .385 on-base percentage for a Los Angeles offense batting .261 as a team, which gives the middle of the order a steady presence against Chicago’s .248 team mark.

On the home side Pete Crow-Armstrong answers with a .284 average and a .535 slugging percentage, numbers that pair contact with extra-base damage at the top of the Chicago order. Andy Pages carries 74 RBIs for the Dodgers, ahead of Shohei Ohtani’s 67, and that production has come with 18 home runs out of center field. Seiya Suzuki gives Chicago a second run producer with 64 RBIs and 19 home runs of his own. The Cubs are also working around a long injury list that includes Matt Shaw on the 10-day IL with a left hand sprain.

Players to Watch: LA Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs

LA Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani — DH. Ohtani has 24 home runs to go with a .293 average and 67 RBIs from the designated hitter spot. His 24 long balls match Pete Crow-Armstrong’s 24 on the other side of the field, which means both dugouts send up a bat that can flip a scoreless afternoon on one swing.

Freddie Freeman — 1B. Contact is the calling card at first base for Los Angeles. Freeman is hitting .310 with a .385 on-base percentage and a .486 slugging percentage, a line that keeps him in front of Ohtani’s .293 in batting average. That combination lets the Dodgers hand him at-bats with runners on and expect the ball in play.

Andy Pages — CF. Center field has become an RBI spot in this lineup. Pages has driven in 74 runs with 18 home runs and a .268 average, and those 74 RBIs are the highest total in today’s game, ahead of Crow-Armstrong’s 65.

Chicago Cubs

Pete Crow-Armstrong — CF. Crow-Armstrong does a little of everything for Chicago, hitting .284 with 24 home runs and 65 RBIs. His .535 slugging percentage sits well clear of the Cubs’ team figure of .415, and a .384 on-base percentage puts him on base often enough to matter in a lineup batting .248 as a group.

Seiya Suzuki — RF. Right field is where Chicago’s other real power bat lives. Suzuki is at .274 with 19 home runs and 64 RBIs, and his .482 slugging percentage trails Crow-Armstrong’s .535 among the Cubs hitters here.

Michael Busch — 1B. Busch has 63 RBIs and 14 home runs at first base, one behind Suzuki’s 64 in the run-producing column. His .241 average comes attached to a .354 on-base percentage, so the walks keep him useful through the stretches when the hits dry up.
