Players to Watch: Colorado Rockies vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
Colorado Rockies
Mickey Moniak — LF. Moniak leads the Rockies’ listed hitters with 12 home runs and 28 RBIs while batting .280, giving Colorado one of its best combinations of contact and power. His .607 slugging percentage makes him the lineup’s clearest extra-base threat against an Arizona staff with a 4.17 team ERA.
Troy Johnston — RF. Johnston is hitting .324 with a .383 on-base percentage out of right field, the most disciplined bat in the Rockies’ lineup leaders. With a .453 slugging mark on top of the average, he’s the table-setting profile this Colorado offense leans on to keep innings alive against Soroka.
Tomoyuki Sugano — SP. Sugano gets the start tonight at 4-3 with a 4.02 ERA over 47.0 innings, the veteran arm the Rockies are sending against the Diamondbacks lineup. He’s punched out 25 hitters and worked a 1.26 WHIP, which gives him a manageable runners-on-base profile against the heart of Arizona’s order.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Ildemaro Vargas — 1B. Vargas is hitting .325 with seven home runs and a team-best 32 RBIs from first base, the most productive run-producer on the Diamondbacks roster in tonight’s fact-sheet leaders. His .521 slugging and .349 on-base profile makes him the most balanced bat Soroka can lean on for support behind him.
Nolan Arenado — 3B. Arenado brings seven home runs and 25 RBIs to the lineup at a .273 clip, the established veteran anchor at third base. His 25 RBIs sit behind Vargas’s 32 for the team lead among Arizona’s fact-sheet leaders, putting the corner-infield bats squarely at the center of the run-scoring picture.
Michael Soroka — SP. Soroka takes the ball at 6-2 with a 3.49 ERA and 55 strikeouts across 49.0 innings. His 1.33 WHIP shows he has worked around some baserunners, but his strikeout total gives Arizona a way to limit damage against a Rockies lineup led by Moniak and Johnston.
