Full Cast & Characters on ‘Outlander’ Season 8

Here’s the full cast and characters we’ll see on Outlander Season 8.

Caitríona Balfe as Claire Fraser

Claire’s journey began in 1945 as a combat nurse looking for a second honeymoon, only to be thrust back in time to the year 1743.

Following her brief, protective marriage to Lord John Grey in Season 7 after the false report of Jamie’s death, Claire must navigate the fallout of that union. Claire enters the final season not just as a soldier and healer with knowledge of the future, but as a matriarch whose “future” knowledge is being stretched to its limit. Now settled back at the Ridge, Claire faces her most personal mystery yet: the origin of Fanny, which may lead to shocking revelations about her stillborn daughter, Faith.

We’ll see softer yet more guarded Claire balancing her 20th-century medical ethics with the brutal necessity of wartime surgery.

Balfe also steps behind the camera to direct this season.

Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser

By Season 8, the Jamie we knew in Season 1 has transformed into the patriarch of a massive colonial estate, though his devotion to Claire remains his North Star.

Jamie finds himself in a precarious position as the war intensifies, with his leadership tested as he fights for a country he knows will eventually win, but at a great personal cost. Plus, a book called The Soul of a Rebel, written by Claire’s first husband, Frank Randall purports to predict the date of his death.

Season 8 sees Jamie facing his mortality, no longer fighting for a crown or a clan, but for the literal ground his family stands on as the Revolutionary War arrives at the doorstep of Fraser’s Ridge.

Heughan portrays a more vulnerable Jamie, forced to reconcile his lingering rage toward Lord John Grey with his duty to protect his expanding family from the encroaching enemy forces.

Sophie Skelton as Brianna “Bree” MacKenzie

After fleeing the 1970s due to threats surrounding the “Spanish Gold,” Brianna returns to the 18th century with a fierce protective instinct. Her arc focuses on her role as an innovato, using her engineering skills to fortify the Ridge, and as a mother trying to give her children a stable life in an unstable century.

Bree will serve as the tactical genius the Frasers need to survive as the war arrives at their doorstep.

Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie

From being accidentally sold into slavery by Jamie in Season 4 to losing his singing voice after a near-fatal hanging in Season 5, Roger has undergone the most dramatic transformation of the cast.

By Season 8, Roger has fully embraced his calling as a minister, but his pacifist nature is being tested by the violence of the war. Still, Roger will help Jamie navigate the “ghosts” of Frank Randall’s writings and the wider community come to terms with the horrors of the war, all while trying to ensure his own family’s survival in a time they once tried to leave.

John Bell as Ian Murray

From the scrawny lad kidnapped by pirates in Season 3 to the tattooed Mohawk warrior we see now, Ian is another character who has undergone a wild transformation throughout the series.

His years living with the Mohawk tribe gave him a unique cultural duality that often saves the family in diplomatic crises. In Season 8, Ian is finally finding the peace he lacked after losing his Mohawk wife. His marriage to Rachel Hunter and his impending fatherhood raises the stakes for him, providing a strong motivator to serve a key role in the defense.

Izzy Meikle-Small as Rachel Hunter

Rachel quickly became the spark that grounded Ian in Season 7. In Season 8, she’s a critical piece of the Ridge’s medical operations. Her storyline involves the tension of raising a child in a household of warriors, and her blossoming friendship with Claire allows her to step into a larger role as a healer. She represents the new America: A blend of peaceful ideals and the hard-won reality of the frontier.

David Berry as Lord John Grey

Lord John’s unrequited love for Jamie has been the show’s most poignant subplot since Season 3. After his marriage to Claire in Season 7 to protect her from arrest, John’s relationship with Jamie is at an all-time low.

In Season 8, John is a pariah and his loyalty to the British Crown is wavering as he sees the corruption of the war. His personal life in shambles, his primary goal is protecting his ward, William, from the truth that his biological father is Jamie, a rebel Scot.

Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom

The Ninth Earl of Ellesmere and the unwitting biological son of Jamie Fraser. William grew up in the lap of luxury, believing he was the son of the late Ludovic Ransom. Since Season 7, William has been on a collision course with the truth: Jamie is his real dad.

In Season 8, William, as a British officer, is unknowingly fighting against his own biological family. His internal conflict is exacerbated by his growing attraction to Amaranthus Grey and his increasing suspicion that Lord John has been keeping a life-altering secret from him for decades.

Kieran Brew as Charles Cunningham

Charles Cunningham is a veteran officer who arrives at the Ridge with his mother and a season antagonist. Unlike previous villains, many who were motivated by sadism, Cunningham is driven by a rigid sense of honor and loyalty to the Crown. He’s the one organizing the Loyalist neighbors on the Ridge to spy on and sabotage Jamie’s plans. His presence highlights the “neighbor against neighbor” reality of the American Revolution.

Carla Woodcock as Amaranthus Grey

The daughter-in-law of Lord John’s brother, Amaranthus is a young, clever widow. She enters the scene as a person in distress, but her motivations are multi-layered: She is a master of social manipulation and becomes a central figure in William’s life, distracting him from his duties and potentially leading him toward a truth he isn’t ready to face.

Florrie May Wilkinson as Fanny

Fanny’s arrival is the catalyst for the season’s most emotional moment. Taken in by the Frasers after a series of tragic events involving her sister, Fanny becomes a surrogate daughter to Claire. However, she possesses a small item — and a specific memory — that hint at a connection to the time-traveling community. Uncovering her origins will be a major plot point in the final season for Claire.

César Domboy as Fergus Fraser & Lauren Lyle as Marsali Fraser

After moving to Wilmington to start a print shop and provide a safer life for their son Henri-Christian, the couple returns to the fray.

Fergus, the pickpocket-turned-gentleman, remains Jamie’s most loyal “son,” while Marsali remains the only person capable of out-snarking Claire. Their presence in Season 8 brings the Highland spirit into the heart of the American struggle.
