HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Overview

The DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) is expanding again.

After recent strong offerings from DC shows and movies to rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s slew of top tier Marvel Comics-based shows and movies, including Superman, Supergirl and The Penguin, the latest DC extended universe show. Lanterns, premiered on HBO Max on August 16, 2026, brings some of DC comics’ most iconic superheroes, the members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force, into the fold. But if you were expecting a jaunt through the galaxy a la Guardians of the Galaxy or Captain Marvel, think again.

This telling of the Green Lanterns’ story is more like a superpowered season of True Detective meets buddy cop show: It’s actually a DC Universe murder mystery set on Earth, in a dusty stretch of the American heartland, and it focuses on two of the most well-known Lanterns of all time: John Stewart and Hal Jordan. Besides those two, there are plenty of other characters in the show, so here’s your guide to who’s who in HBO’s Lanterns.

Aaron Pierre as John Stewart

Known For: Rebel Ridge, Mufasa: The Lion King, The Underground Railroad, Krypton

John Stewart is the main character of Lanterns and a new recruit to the Green Lantern Corps. A former Marine, Stewart is training under veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan as he learns to wield the powers of a Green Lantern and take on the responsibilities of protecting Earth and the wider universe.

In DC Comics, John Stewart is one of the Corps’ most prominent Green Lanterns. Like other members of the Green Lantern Corps, he uses a power ring fueled by willpower to create constructs, fly, and perform a wide range of extraordinary feats. His military background, discipline, and strong sense of duty have made him one of the most respected Green Lanterns in DC history.

Lanterns is set in two separate timelines, 2016 and 2026. The 2016 timeline explores John’s training as a Lantern by Hal Jordan, a veteran Green Lantern, and their investigation into a public mass shooting. The 2026 timeline follows John’s investigation into Hal’s apparent murder after his body is found in rural Nebraska and his encounters with other members of the Green Lantern Corps. The murder mystery angle provides the story’s plot progression, while the backstory, tutelage and succession angles give it emotional weight.

Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan

Known For: Friday Night Lights, Bloodline, Manchester by the Sea, Zero Dark Thirty

Hal Jordan is arguably the most famous Green Lantern in DC Comics history. He was a U.S. Air Force test pilot before joining the Green Lanterns and the first human to ever be chosen by a power ring. The version of Hal in Lanterns is at the tail end of his long career and isn’t exactly enthusiastic about training his apparent replacement. He’s grizzled, cynical and reckless at times, but he retains the fearlessness and incredible willpower that made him successful as a Lantern.

Hal’s death in the 2026 timeline sets off the show’s main plot.

Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner

Known For: Firefly, Castle, The Rookie, Superman

Guy Gardner is another Green Lantern, and he stands in stark contrast to Hal and John. He’s loud, obnoxious, deeply egotistical and confidently rocks a pretty iconic bowl cut. Lanterns’ version of Guy has already seen action on the big screen in 2025’s James Gunn-directed Superman, which ties the show into the larger DCU.

In the 2026 timeline, he takes Hal’s power ring following his death.

Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry

Known For: No Country for Old Men, Boardwalk Empire, Trainspotting, Brave

Kerry, the sheriff of Rushville, Nebraska, is the local law enforcement presence standing in the way of the two cosmic cops that have descended on her town during the Lanterns’ 2016 investigation. She ends up in a bit of a complicated relationship with Hal, and she’s the one who calls his body in and brings John back to Nebraska in 2026.

Ulrich Thomsen as Thaal Sinestro

Known For: The Celebration, Banshee, The World Is Not Enough, Counterpart

Thaal Sinestro is one of the Green Lanterns’ classic foils. He’s a former Green Lantern and Hal’s former mentor who became corrupted by power and went rogue. In the comics, he founded his own Yellow Lantern Corps using yellow rings and the power of fear rather than willpower. Hal helped capture and imprison his former teacher, and that’s where he is when Lanterns introduces him.

During their investigation, Sinestro reemerges as both an uneasy ally and source of information for Hal and John and the cold, calculating manipulator who could be working behind the scenes to his own ends.

Garret Dillahunt as William Macon

Known For: Deadwood, Raising Hope, Fear the Walking Dead, No Country for Old Men

William Macon is a wealthy and powerful figure in Rushville, and he’s at the center of the Lanterns’ investigation. He’s also Sheriff Kerry’s father-in-law. He’s rich enough to have his own local militia, as he despises anything having to do with extraterrestrials on Earth. Initially, he tries to make nice with John and Hal and aides their investigation by helping them interrogate an alien, but he quickly becomes a prime suspect in the case.

Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe Macon

Known For: Never Have I Ever, The Night Of, Big Little Lies

Zoe is William Macon’s wife. She’s influential and powerful within the Macon empire and the community in her own right, but doesn’t exactly fall in line with her family’s marching orders. She develops romantic feelings for John and aids the Lanterns’ investigation through her inside knowledge of the Macon family’s activities.

Jason Ritter as Billy Macon

Known For: Joan of Arcadia, The Class, The Event, Matlock

Billy is William’s son, Kerry’s husband and Noah’s father. He’s a local attorney straddling the line between law enforcement and his powerful family. He operates as a mediator, advocate or dutiful son depending on the situation, but always has to navigate the fact that his father’s authority and his wife’s law-enforcement responsibilities do not always pull him in the same direction.

Nicole Ari Parker/Jasmine Cephas Jones as Bernadette Stewart

Known For: Soul Food, And Just Like That…, Sex and the City

Bernadette Stewart is John Stewart’s mother. The show’s flashback timeline follows her character across a number of years, with a younger version played by Jasmine Cephas Jones, to explore John’s life and upbringing before the Green Lanterns recruited him.

Sherman Augustus/J. Alphonse Nicholson as John Stewart Sr.

Known For: Into the Badlands, Stranger Things, Westworld, P-Valley, Clipped

John Sr. is John’s father. He’s a U.S. Marine and forceful father figure who embodies fearlessness, discipline and strength. His influence helps contextualize both John’s military service and his complicated relationship with authority and courage.

Paul Ben-Victor as Antaan

Known For: The Wire, Preacher, Nobody Wants This, The Lincoln Lawyer

Antaan is an enigmatic, extraterrestrial investigator secretly living and operating on Earth. Antaan is completely unconcerned with Earth’s laws or the Green Lantern Corps’ jurisdiction. He is dead set on exposing the Earth-based mystery that the Lanterns are also investigating in Nebraska to avenge the wrongs committed against his people.

Laura Linney as a Guardian of the Universe

Known For: Ozark, John Adams, The Big C, You Can Count on Me

The Guardians of the Universe are the ancient immortal beings who created the Green Lantern Corps and enforce its laws from the planet Oa. The Guardian is the voice of authority that Stewart and Jordan answer to, and the character helps expand the show’s scope beyond rural America to the cosmic level.
