The Cast & Characters of ‘The Bear’

Here’s the full cast of The Bear for Season 5. The following sections contain spoilers from Seasons 1-4.

Jeremy Allen White as Carmy Berzatto

Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto is one of the most gifted chefs of his generation, whose relentless pursuit in the kitchen brings plenty of professional success, often at the expense of his personal life. The show begins with him returning home to Chicago where he inherits The Beef, a run-down Italian beef sandwich shop, after his brother Michael’s death. He works to build it into a functional restaurant in the first season and then a top-tier restaurant in Season 2, Season 3 and Season 4.

Brilliant, determined and deeply self-critical, Carmy excels in the kitchen but struggles with emotional vulnerability and interpersonal relationships. Much of his journey centers on learning how to trust, collaborate and connect with the people around him rather than trying to control everything himself.

The transformation of Carmy’s relationship with his sister Natalie (“Sugar”) illustrates this personal growth, going from a distanced and strained relationship to trusted partners. His partnership with Sydney Adamu has followed a similar path. While their working relationship has experienced challenges due to Carmy’s perfectionism and domineering nature, they gradually developed a sense of mutual respect within the restaurant.

Carmy’s longest running conflict is with Richie. They constantly butted heads, getting into shouting matches and derailing the progress of the restaurant early in the series, but, with time, they have built up a better working relationship. Now, they’ve developed a complimentary partnership, with Carmy bringing his culinary superpowers to the kitchen and Richie bringing his superpower of charisma and personality to the front of the house.

Family remains both his biggest source of pain and motivation, with his relationship with his mother being especially fragile.

Then there’s Claire. The two reconnect after years apart and quickly build a loving relationship, but Carmy’s fear of happiness and his tendency to put work first ultimately leads him to push her away. That said, by the end of Season 4 there are moments between the pair hinting that their story might not be done just yet.

Carmy has always been a great mentor to Marcus, Tina and Ebra. Their success becomes evidence of Carmy’s own growth: for the first time, he believes the restaurant can thrive without him carrying every burden alone.

Though his future remains uncertain heading into Season 5, his priorities have begun to shift. After years spent chasing perfection, what Carmy seems to want most is peace.

Ayo Edebiri as Sydney Adamu

Sydney Adamu is an ambitious, talented chef determined to make it big in Chicago’s culinary scene. When The Bear begins, she is recovering — financially and emotionally — from the failure of her own catering business, leaving her living with her dad and trying to get back on her feet as a chef in Chicago.

Highly skilled and a studious foodie, Syd knows everything there is to know about the food industry, and that includes Carmy Berzatto. So, when he inherits a dingy sandwich shop, she jumps at the opportunity to learn from one of the world’s best. What begins as a chance to work under Carmy evolves into a partnership that becomes central to the restaurant’s success.

Unlike many of her coworkers who were trained at the school of hard knocks, Sydney’s “fancy” formal training leaves her feeling like an outsider. But she wins them over by doing what she does best: cooking.

Syd looks for every opportunity she can to make her mark, constantly coming up with new dishes and training the staff. Her initial clashes with Richie and Tina have given way to a familial bond. Now, Richie is one of her fiercest supports, and Tina her first star pupil.

By Season 4, Sydney’s frustrations with Carmy lead her to seriously consider leaving for an opportunity to become head chef at a new restaurant led by Chef Adam. Yet despite the appeal of a fresh start, she realizes that The Bear has become more than a job — it has become her home.

Syd ultimately decides to stay at The Bear, and her partnership with Carmy continues to evolve. But she’s still floored when he hands her control of the restaurant as he decides to leave. Now, with Carmy leaving, it’s Syd’s place to run, and it’s time to see what she’s really made of.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Richard “Richie” Jerimovich

Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, better known as “Cousin,” is not actually related to the Berzatto family, but he has long been considered part of it. As Michael’s best friend, Richie was deeply affected by his death, leaving him searching for purpose while navigating life as a divorced father.

When the show opens, he’s still in the aftermath of Michael’s suicide and trying to keep The Beef running as its unofficial manager. But he doesn’t know anything about really running a restaurant. He’s just good with people. Still, stubbornness and pride keep him from letting Carmy make changes, clinging on to the way things used to be.

Over time, he starts to see the value of Carmy’s method and Sydney’s expertise. And Carmy sees his potential as someone who brings people together, eventually making him the maître d’hôtel of The Bear.

The defining moment in Richie’s journey comes in Season 2’s acclaimed episode “Forks,” when he stages at Ever, the fine-dining restaurant where Carmy once worked. There, Richie sees what a fine-tuned kitchen really looks like and finds a new level of inspiration, motivation and purpose that he’d been looking for.

After being one of the most damaged and angriest characters in Season 1, Richie undergoes a dramatic personal transformation. His evolving perspective strengthens his relationships across every part of his life. He becomes a more dependable coworker, a more supportive friend and a more present father to his daughter.

Entering Season 5, Richie is no longer the man desperately trying to preserve the past. He has found a purpose of his own and emerged as one of the restaurant’s most important leaders.

Lionel Bryce as Marcus Brooks

When the series began, Marcus Brooks is an inexperienced baker eager to improve. Now, he’s the pastry chef of The Bear and one of the restaurant’s most dedicated students.

Driven by curiosity and an athlete’s mindset, Marcus is constantly searching for ways to improve. After some initial hesitation, he doesn’t waste time getting caught up with the restaurant’s drama and instead looks to Syd and Carmy as friends and mentors that he can work with and learn from.

In Season 2, Marcus’s life changes when he’s sent to Noma in Copenhagen to train with Chef Luca. Like Richie, Marcus gets a chance to see what an elite kitchen looks like, forming a strong relationship with Luca and bettering his skills so much so that in Season 4, he’s named to Food and Wine magazine’s best new chefs.

Marcus has found family at the restaurant, and after losing his mother in Season 3 and still not able to reestablish his relationship with his father, it is the only family he really has.

As Season 5 begins, his future at The Bear looks bright, and the unresolved chemistry between him and Sydney leaves open the possibility that their relationship could become something more than friendship.

Liza Colón-Zayas as Tina Marrero

Tina Marrero is one of The Bear’s most loyal employees. When the series begins, she is a veteran line cook at The Beef who is skeptical of Carmy and Sydney, preferring the routines established under Michael. But once she recognizes their talent, her skepticism shifts to respect.

Before working at The Beef, Tina had been laid off, struggling for months to find work in an economy that can be especially ruthless to middle-aged, working-class Latina women. After a particularly grueling day, she stops in at The Beef for lunch, where she meets Michael. And for the first time, she got the feeling that someone other than her husband actually believes in her and sees potential.

As The Beef evolves into The Bear, Tina embraces the chance to grow alongside it. Encouraged by Carmy and Sydney, she attends culinary school, develops her skills and earns a promotion to sous-chef.

And even though she finds herself in bigger leagues than she had ever imagined, her stubbornness fuels her to keep going no matter how many setbacks she faces.

Abby Elliott as Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto

Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto is the emotional center of both the Berzatto family and The Bear. As the middle child, she has spent much of her life trying to hold her family together — even when it seems like they have no desire to do the same. Carmy ran away to train at restaurants around the world and become a culinary phenomenon. Her older brother Mikey committed suicide. And her mother Donna, an alcoholic with problems of her own, is frequently taking out her anger on Sugar.

Compassionate and endlessly patient, Sugar is a natural caretaker. She finds balance with her husband Pete, who is the antithesis of the rest of the Berzatto family with his kind and folksy Midwestern presence.

Initially focused on repairing her relationship with Carmy after years of distance, Sugar gradually becomes an essential part of The Bear. As the business manager, she brings stability to an operation that often feels one crisis away from collapse.

Natalie’s nurturing personality helps her form close bonds with Sydney, Marcus and the rest of the staff, becoming the person everyone turns to when they need support. By the end of Season 4, Carmy’s decision to step away from the restaurant places even greater responsibility on Sugar’s shoulders. Already one of The Bear’s most important leaders, she is poised to play an even larger role in guiding its future.

Edwin Lee Gibson as Ebraheim

Ebraheim is one of the longtime line cooks at the original Beef and one of Carmy’s first supporters at the restaurant. An immigrant, military veteran and respected elder of the restaurant, Ebra brings a steady presence to a chaotic kitchen.

As The Beef transitions to fine dining, Ebra carves his own path, rather than shift into a new role like Tina or Marcus. He finds purpose in helping preserve and expand the sandwich business that made The Beef a neighborhood institution.

By Season 4, Ebra is overseeing the restaurant’s successful lunch window and begins working with consultant Albert Schnur to explore ways of growing that side of the business. Schner is impressed and works with Ebra to come up with a business case that can be pitched to Uncle Jimmy and Computer.

Matty Matheson as Neil Fak

Neil Fak, AKA Fak, is a longtime family friend of the Berzattos and Richie. He’s a do-it-all handyman and a constant presence at the original Beef, fixing toilets and wiring issues. He becomes an official member of The Bear team when it is literally being built, serving as the general contractor.

Warm and endlessly loyal, Fak eventually transitions into a front-of-house role under Richie’s guidance. He continues to act as a source of comic relief and an essential part of the restaurant’s culture.

Corey Hendrix as Gary “Sweeps” Woods

Gary “Sweeps” Woods is the sommelier at The Bear after serving as a utility player at the original Beef. Gary is a former minor league baseball player who brings a calm, unfazed presence to the restaurant in whatever role is needed.

As The Beef evolves into The Bear, Gary takes on the unexpected role of sommelier despite having absolutely no qualifications. Given the opportunity to learn from industry experts, he embraces the challenge and develops the expertise needed to thrive in fine dining.

Molly Gordon as Claire Dunlap

Claire Dunlap is Carmy Berzatto’s longtime friend and former love interest, reentering his life in Season 2. An ER physician, Claire is calm and comfortable under pressure in a way that contrasts sharply with Carmy’s anxiety and self-destructive tendencies.

Throughout the second season, they fall in love again, only for Carmy to accidentally voice his fears of the future while Claire is in earshot. After months apart, Carmy begins the difficult process of apologizing and taking responsibility for his actions. By the end of Season 4, the two share several warm interactions, suggesting there may still be hope for their future together.

Oliver Platt as Uncle Jimmy

Uncle Jimmy is the quasi-adoptive father to the Berzattos and one of The Bear’s primary financial backers. A shrewd Chicago businessman, Jimmy cares deeply about Carmy, Natalie, Richie and the rest of the restaurant’s staff, but he also understands that sentiment alone cannot keep a business alive.

So, Uncle Jimmy is clear from the jump that if The Bear doesn’t become profitable, he will cut his losses and pull the plug. And by the end of Season 4, it seems like he is ready to do just that, until Ebra comes to him and Computer with a proposal to expand the lunch counter to a few other locations in Chicago, potentially offering a path forward The Bear.

Jamie Lee Curtis as Donna Berzatto

Donna Berzatto is the complicated matriarch of the Berzatto family. Introduced in the unforgettable episode “Fishes,” Donna’s alcoholism, emotional volatility and unresolved trauma have profoundly shaped the lives of her children.

In the present-day timeline of The Bear, Donna is filled with regrets and ready to express remorse. It’s in Season 4 we see progress, when Donna jumps at the chance to be there for her daughter as she gives birth.

She’s not drinking. She’s getting counseling. And she’s a completely different person from the one that we found on Christmas in “Fishes.” Her ongoing recovery offers hope that the Berzatto family may finally begin to heal.

Will Poulter as Chef Luca

Chef Luca is a world-class pastry chef introduced in Season 2 when Marcus travels to Copenhagen for training. Luca is patient, straightforward and becomes a perfect mentor and friend to Marcus. When The Bear is facing a financial deadline to close, Luca joins the staff for free as a stage, something well below his ranking. But he can’t help but be there for an old friend and a new one.

Sarah Ramos as Jessica

Jessica was introduced in Season 2 as the head expediter at Ever. Her mastery of keeping the kitchen moving smoothly blows Richie’s mind and gives him someone to look up to.

After Ever closes and Jessica is on the market for a new role, Richie turns to her to help tame the kitchen of The Bear and save the restaurant.

She has quietly been one of the biggest changing forces in Richie’s life. With seeds of romance between them, Season 5 will reveal if there’s more to this relationship.
