Ghana (0-0-0) vs. Panama (0-0-0) — Group L Match Preview
Ghana open their Group L campaign against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto, with both nations starting their tournament. Ghana reach a fifth World Cup™ appearance and a second straight after topping their CAF group, carrying the memory of one of Africa’s most memorable World Cup runs, a quarterfinal appearance in 2010. Panama qualified unbeaten out of CONCACAF for only their second appearance since their 2018 debut.
Carlos Queiroz takes charge of Ghana at a fifth straight World Cup™ as a coach, while Thomas Christiansen has overseen Panama’s rise since taking charge in 2020. Up front for Ghana, captain Jordan Ayew set up 7 goals in qualifying, anchoring an attack that also leans on the Premier League form of Antoine Semenyo. Panama counter through Adalberto Carrasquilla, a former CONCACAF Player of the Year and one of their main midfield creators if fully fit, while veteran captain Anibal Godoy brings a record 159 caps to the spine of the team. Recent preparation has been uneven for both, with Ghana dropping friendlies to Austria 5-1 and Germany 2-1, and Panama conceding six in a 6-2 loss to Brazil after edging South Africa 2-1. Panama also carry the memory of a 6-1 defeat to England in 2018, a marker of how far they have traveled to reach this stage again.

Players to Watch: Ghana vs. Panama
Ghana
Jordan Ayew — Forward. The Leicester man wears the captain’s armband and was Ghana’s qualifying creator-in-chief, setting up 7 goals on the road to this World Cup™. He gives Queiroz a focal point who can both finish and link play, and his leadership matters for a side packed with younger attackers.
Antoine Semenyo — Winger. Semenyo arrives off superb Premier League form with Manchester City, where his pace and direct running have made him one of Ghana’s most dangerous wide threats. For the Black Stars, he stretches defenses and offers a counterattacking outlet that Panama’s midfielders will need to track all match.
Iñaki Williams — Forward. Williams gives Ghana another experienced option across the front line, with the pace to stretch Panama’s defense and the movement to combine with Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo. With Thomas Partey unavailable for the Toronto opener, Ghana may need more of their attacking balance to come from the front three.
Panama
Jose Fajardo — Striker. Fajardo is Panama’s lead striker and the point of their attack, the man Christiansen looks to for the goals that turn tight Group L margins. His movement in the box gives Panama a focal point against a Ghana defense still finding its rhythm.
Adalberto Carrasquilla — Midfielder. A former CONCACAF Player of the Year now with UNAM Pumas, Carrasquilla is the creative heartbeat of this Panama side. He dictates tempo and threads the passes that unlock defenses, making him the player Partey and Ghana’s midfield must contain.
Anibal Godoy — Defensive midfielder. Godoy captains Panama and brings a record 159 caps of experience to the base of midfield. The San Diego FC veteran is the steadying presence who shields the back line and sets the tone, exactly the kind of leader Panama leaned on through an unbeaten CONCACAF qualifying run.
