Uzbekistan open their Group K campaign against Colombia at Mexico City Stadium in Mexico City, two sides arriving on level terms at 0-0-0 but along very different paths. This is Uzbekistan’s first World Cup, earned through the AFC third round to make them the first Central Asian nation ever to reach the tournament after seven prior failed campaigns, and they are guided by Fabio Cannavaro, the 2006 World Cup-winning captain and a former Ballon d’Or winner. Colombia come in for their first World Cup since 2018, having finished third in CONMEBOL qualifying with 28 goals, a tally bettered only by Argentina.
