England and Croatia open their Group L campaigns at the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, in a meeting of two UEFA group winners with very different histories at this stage. England arrive as the 1966 champions still chasing a first major trophy since, here for their 8th consecutive World Cup under Thomas Tuchel, while Zlatko Dalic’s Croatia carry the pedigree of 2018 runners-up and 2022 third-place finishers behind a veteran core making one last push. Much of England’s threat runs through Harry Kane, the captain and all-time top scorer who reached more than 60 goals across the 2025-26 club season.
On the other side, Croatia lean on 40-year-old captain Luka Modric, who arrives for a 5th World Cup and still sets the tempo from midfield. The midfield battle deepens with Jude Bellingham anchoring England’s engine room against Mateo Kovacic, who controls play for Croatia. The sides know each other well, having last met at the 2020 European Championship, where England won 1-0, and again in the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League. Both come in with useful but uneven preparation behind them: Croatia beat Colombia 2-1 in March, while England drew 1-1 with Uruguay, lost 1-0 to Japan and later finished their warm-up schedule with a 3-0 win over Costa Rica.

Harry Kane — Striker. The captain and England’s all-time leading scorer, Kane reached more than 60 goals across the 2025-26 season for Bayern Munich. He remains the focal point of everything England build going forward and the first name on Tuchel’s team sheet.
Jude Bellingham — Midfielder. The Real Madrid star is the dynamic heartbeat of England’s midfield, capable of arriving late in the box and dictating the rhythm in equal measure. His ability to link defense to attack gives England a second scoring threat alongside Kane.
Bukayo Saka — Winger. Arsenal’s Saka is England’s primary wide threat, stretching defenses and cutting inside onto his stronger foot. His pace and directness on the flank offer Tuchel a reliable outlet against a Croatia side that likes to dominate possession.

Luka Modric — Midfielder. At age 40, the AC Milan midfielder and Croatia captain arrives for a 5th World Cup and still conducts Croatia’s midfield with the vision that defined their runs to the 2018 final and 2022 third-place finish. His passing range remains central to how Dalic’s side controls a match.
Mateo Kovacic — Midfielder. The Manchester City man is Croatia’s midfield controller, recycling possession and shielding the back line alongside Modric. His engine and positional discipline let the veterans around him push higher up the pitch.
Josko Gvardiol — Defender. Also of Manchester City, Gvardiol is a ball-playing center back who can start attacks from deep and step into midfield when needed. His comfort on the ball makes him a key figure against England’s quick wide forwards.
