Chicago White Sox (45-39) at Baltimore Orioles (39-48) — Game Preview

The Chicago White Sox bring a 45-39 record into Oriole Park at Camden Yards to face the Baltimore Orioles, who sit at 39-48 and 12.5 games back in the AL East. Chicago has hit 118 home runs as a team on the season, while Baltimore’s pitching staff carries a 4.43 ERA — a gap in offensive production and run prevention that shapes how these two clubs approach the afternoon.

Sam Antonacci has been the White Sox’ most reliable contact bat, hitting .291 with a .391 on-base percentage and a .413 slugging percentage from left field, while on the home side Pete Alonso anchors the Baltimore lineup with 19 home runs and 59 RBIs at first base.

Colson Montgomery adds a second power threat in the Chicago lineup, with 21 home runs and 49 RBIs from the shortstop position despite hitting .221. Miguel Vargas gives the White Sox a third bat worth watching, with 19 home runs and 52 RBIs from the corner — Chicago leads the division and will be looking to widen the gap as the trade deadline approaches in July.

Players to Watch: Chicago White Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles

Chicago White Sox

Sam Antonacci — LF. Antonacci is hitting .291 out of left field, making him the White Sox’ most consistent contact producer in the lineup. His .391 on-base percentage and .413 slugging percentage reflect a hitter who reaches base at a high rate and does damage when he does — a combination that makes him one of the more complete offensive contributors Chicago will send to the plate today.

Colson Montgomery — SS. The White Sox shortstop has 21 home runs and 49 RBIs on the season, providing Chicago with a power source in the middle of the infield. Montgomery hits .221, so the output comes in clusters, but at 21 home runs before the All-Star break, his ability to change a game with one swing keeps his spot in the lineup secure.

Miguel Vargas — 3B. Vargas has 52 RBIs and 19 home runs while hitting .248 from third base, ranking ahead of Montgomery (49 RBI) among Chicago’s hitters in run production. He’s the Chicago run-producer most likely to do damage with runners on base, and his combination of average and power makes him one of the more dangerous bats in the Chicago lineup.

Baltimore Orioles

Pete Alonso — 1B. Alonso has 19 home runs and 59 RBIs on the season, pacing the Baltimore offense in run production. His .249 average is functional, but it’s the RBI total that defines his value here — 59 through the first half means Alonso has been consistently productive in situations where Baltimore needed runs most.

Taylor Ward — LF. Ward is hitting .249 in left field with a .379 on-base percentage that makes him a consistent table-setter in the Baltimore order. The .351 slugging percentage is modest, but Ward’s ability to get on base at nearly a .380 clip gives the Orioles a reliable catalyst at the top of the lineup.

Adley Rutschman — C. Rutschman is hitting .252 with 8 home runs and 42 RBIs while posting a .326 on-base percentage and .451 slugging percentage from behind the plate. The .451 slugging marks him as a legitimate power option at the catcher position, and his ability to reach base and do extra-base damage gives the Orioles a middle-of-the-order presence their lineup depends on.
