Pittsburgh at 19-17 has been a pleasant surprise in the NL Central, and their pitching staff has been one of the harder outs in the league — they’ve given up just 28 home runs all season, the fewest in Major League Baseball, a number that reflects both the quality of their pitching and the team’s focus on limiting extra-base damage. Arizona at 17-17 has been competitive and balanced, and they come in with a lineup that includes veteran presence capable of testing Pittsburgh’s staff in ways other opponents have not.
The Diamondbacks added Nolan Arenado in a winter trade that brought one of the game’s most decorated third basemen to the desert, and his combination of defensive excellence and run-producing ability gives Arizona a middle-of-the-order presence that any pitching staff has to respect. For Pittsburgh, holding Arizona to a low run total would be another data point in support of what’s been one of the league’s quietest pitching stories in the first quarter of the season.

His track record of delivering in high-leverage situations and his ability to punish pitchers who work him in the zone make him one of the more difficult outs in the National League, and Pittsburgh’s staff will need to be careful about how they attack him tonight.
