Atlanta Dream (12-7) at Washington Mystics (9-9) — Game Preview

The Atlanta Dream bring a 12-7 record into CareFirst Arena on Thursday, while the Washington Mystics sit at 9-9 and 2.5 games back of first place in the league standings.

Atlanta has been one of the more efficient offensive teams in the WNBA this season, averaging 88.3 points per game to Washington’s 82.9, a gap that reflects the Dream’s edge in transition and half-court execution. Rhyne Howard has been the engine of that offense, putting up 18.6 points per game on 41.8 percent shooting from the field, while the Mystics counter with Kiki Iriafen providing both scoring punch at 15.6 points per game and interior dominance at 9.2 rebounds per game.

Jordin Canada’s 7.0 assists per game make the Dream a particularly difficult team to scheme against — her ability to create for others stretches opposing defenses and generates open looks that Howard and others can capitalize on. Washington’s rebounding numbers actually give them a team edge on the glass at 36.2 per game versus Atlanta’s 34.6, and Shakira Austin has been a big reason for that, averaging 13.0 points and 9.2 rebounds per game at center.

Angel Reese adds another dimension for the Dream on the offensive boards, pulling in 5.4 offensive rebounds per game as part of her 11.6 total, which makes second-chance opportunities a constant threat for Atlanta. With the Mystics sitting below .500 and needing wins to stay in playoff contention, this is a game Washington can’t afford to give away at home.

Players to Watch: Atlanta Dream vs. Washington Mystics

Atlanta Dream

Rhyne Howard — G. The Dream’s leading scorer this season, Howard is averaging 18.6 points per game on 41.8 percent shooting from the field, making her the offensive focal point in every game plan Atlanta faces. At the free-throw line she’s been even sharper, converting at 88.1 percent — a number that becomes especially important late in tight games when the defense is forced to foul.

Jordin Canada — G. Canada runs the Dream’s offense from the point guard spot, averaging 7.0 assists per game across 30.5 minutes per night, making her one of the more productive distributors in the league this season. She manages 2.2 turnovers per game at that assist volume, a ratio that reflects her decision-making under pressure and her ability to keep the offense moving without giving possessions away.

Angel Reese — F. Reese has established herself as one of the premier rebounders in the WNBA this season, averaging 11.6 rebounds per game for the Dream — and what separates her profile is the offensive glass, where she pulls in 5.4 per game. Her 6.3 defensive rebounds per game keep opponents from getting second looks, while her presence on the offensive end creates constant extra possession opportunities for Atlanta.

Washington Mystics

Kiki Iriafen — F. Iriafen has emerged as the Mystics’ most complete frontcourt player this season, averaging 15.6 points per game on 52.1 percent from the field while also leading Washington with 9.2 rebounds per game. Her 2.5 offensive rebounds per game complement her defensive work — she pulls in 6.7 on that end — making her a consistent double-double threat every time the Mystics take the floor.

Shakira Austin — C. Austin brings both scoring and interior presence to Washington’s frontcourt, averaging 13.0 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 43.4 percent from the field in 17 games this season. Her ability to draw fouls and get to the line — 3.6 free throw attempts per game — gives the Mystics a second reliable scoring option in the paint alongside Iriafen, and her 1.3 blocks per game make her a factor defensively as well.

Alicia Florez — G. Florez provides playmaking off the bench for Washington, averaging 3.1 assists per game in her nine appearances this season. Her ability to initiate offense and keep the ball moving gives the Mystics a reliable option to spell their starters and maintain the pace that Washington needs to stay competitive in a game against an Atlanta team with high offensive output.
