Arizona Diamondbacks (41-39) at Tampa Bay Rays (45-33) — Game Preview

The Arizona Diamondbacks bring a 41-39 record into Tropicana Field tonight to face a Tampa Bay Rays club that sits at 45-33 and leads the AL East by two games. Tampa Bay carries a clear offensive edge — the Rays are hitting .258 as a team while Arizona checks in at .239 — and the Rays’ pitching staff owns a 3.87 ERA compared to the Diamondbacks’ 4.29. On the visitor’s side, Ketel Marte has been Arizona’s most dangerous run-producer, posting 13 home runs and 47 RBIs at second base, and Corbin Carroll gives the lineup another dimension with a .279 average, .365 on-base percentage and .537 slugging percentage, a contact and extra-base combination that keeps the Diamondbacks from being a one-dimensional club. For Tampa Bay, Junior Caminero has been the home team’s power engine, with 19 home runs and 43 RBIs from the hot corner, while Jonathan Aranda leads the Rays in RBIs with 54 to go with 12 home runs and a .287 average. Yandy Diaz, who bats .331 with a .412 OBP and .512 slugging mark, has been the steadiest contact hitter in the lineup and adds consistent on-base ability at the top of the order.

Players to Watch: Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Arizona Diamondbacks

Corbin Carroll — RF. Carroll is hitting .279 with an on-base percentage of .365 and a slugging percentage of .537 from right field, making him Arizona’s most complete offensive profile in the lineup. His .537 slugging percentage reflects consistent extra-base production, and paired with his .365 OBP, Carroll gives the Diamondbacks one of the more well-rounded offensive lines in the lineup.

Ketel Marte — 2B. Marte leads the Diamondbacks in both home runs and RBIs, with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs while hitting .265 at second base. He’s been Arizona’s most consistent run producer through the first half of the season, and his combination of average and power gives the middle of the order something to build around on nights when the lineup needs a big hit.

Tampa Bay Rays

Yandy Diaz — DH. Diaz is posting the Rays’ best batting average at .331, with a .412 on-base percentage and a .512 slugging mark that makes him a genuine threat to do damage in any at-bat. His ability to get on base consistently — ranking among the strongest OBP contributors in the Tampa Bay lineup — gives the Rays a constant presence at the top of the order who can set the table for the power behind him.

Junior Caminero — 3B. Caminero is the Rays’ power anchor at third base, having slugged 19 home runs with 43 RBIs and a .285 average through 78 games. The 19 home runs are the most on the Tampa Bay roster, and his RBI total reflects just how consistently he’s come through with runners on base in a Rays lineup built to move them.

Jonathan Aranda — 1B. Aranda leads the Rays in RBIs with 54, adding 12 home runs and a .287 average from first base to give Tampa Bay a second power threat in the middle of the order alongside Caminero. His 54 RBIs place him ahead of Caminero’s 43 in the clubhouse RBI race, and that combination at the corners of the infield is central to why the Rays rank among the AL’s better offenses this season.
