School is back in session at Abbott Elementary, and Philadelphia’s favorite teachers are returning for another year of classroom chaos.
Set at an underfunded public school in Philadelphia, Abbott Elementary follows a group of dedicated teachers and their unpredictable principal as they navigate the challenges of working in public education while doing their best to keep up with their students. Season 5 put the school itself in jeopardy when district-wide budget cuts threatened Abbott with closure, forcing the staff to fight to keep its doors open.
Abbott ultimately survived, but the season ended with some major changes ahead. Gregory accepted a new position as assistant principal, giving him a larger role at Abbott Elementary and a new dynamic with Ava.

‘Abbott Elementary’ Season 6 Cast & Characters Guide
Here’s a look at the main cast of the sixth season of Abbott Elementary:
Quinta Brunson as Janine Teagues
Known from: Buzzfeed Video, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, Miracle Workers, Big Mouth
Quinta Brunson stars as Janine Teagues, an endlessly optimistic second-grade teacher who is determined to give her students the education and support they deserve. Janine genuinely believes she can make a difference, even when a lack of funding and limited resources make her job more than difficult. Her determination sometimes leads her to take on more than she can handle, but she rarely gives up when she sets her mind to something.
Over the past five seasons, Janine has grown more confident as a teacher, leader and person. She briefly left the classroom to work for the school district before realizing that Abbott was where she wanted to be, and her relationship with fellow teacher Gregory Eddie has developed from a longtime friendship into a romantic relationship.
Season 6 brings Janine back to the classroom as Abbott begins another school year following the budget crisis that nearly closed the school.
Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie
Known from: Dear White People, Everybody Hates Chris, Unaccompanied Minors, Let It Shine
Tyler James Williams plays Gregory Eddie, a reserved and practical teacher whose path at Abbott began when he was hired as a substitute. Gregory originally had his sights set on becoming a principal, but after spending time in the classroom, he discovered how much he enjoyed teaching, and eventually accepted a permanent position at Abbott.
Gregory tends to be more serious and levelheaded than many of his coworkers, although his time at Abbott has pushed him to open up and become more involved with the school community. His relationship with Janine also developed slowly over several seasons before the two finally got together at the end of Season 3. Since then, they’ve continued navigating their relationship while working together at Abbott.
At the end of Season 5, Gregory took an important step toward his original career goals when he accepted a position as Abbott’s assistant principal. Season 6 will see him balance his new administrative responsibilities with his work in the classroom.
Janelle James as Ava Coleman
Known from: Black Monday, Central Park, Super Duper Bunny League, Tom of Your Life
Janelle James plays Ava Coleman, Abbott Elementary’s often self-absorbed, generally unpredictable and frequently inappropriate principal. Despite initially having little experience in education and even less interest in actually running a school, Ava managed to land the principal position after blackmailing the superintendent. Her questionable leadership decisions, tendency to avoid work and habit of prioritizing just about anything over her administrative responsibilities regularly frustrate the teachers.
Despite being objectively bad at her job at the start, Ava has gradually become more invested in Abbott and its students. She has proven capable of stepping up when the school needs her, even if she still approaches the job in her own unconventional way.
Ava is also known for openly flirting with Gregory, despite his lack of interest in her advances. Season 6 creates an interesting new dynamic between Ava and Gregory as his promotion to assistant principal means the two will have to work closely together to make administrative decisions for Abbott.
Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard
Known from: Instant Mom, The Mighty Quinn, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, Moesha
Sheryl Lee Ralph plays Barbara Howard, an old-school kindergarten teacher and one of the most experienced educators at Abbott. After twenty years in the classroom, Barbara has earned the respect of both her coworkers and students, and even the school’s rowdiest children know to straighten up when Mrs. Howard is around.
Barbara frequently serves as a mentor and voice of reason for the other teachers, particularly Janine, whom she has gradually come to view as her “work daughter.” While Barbara can be traditional and set in her ways, her years at Abbott have also pushed her to adapt to changes in the classroom and the outside world, and learn from the younger teachers around her.
After helping the staff fight to keep Abbott open amid the district’s budget cuts in Season 5, Barbara returns for another year as one of the school’s most respected teachers.
Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti
Known from: The Parent Trap, Bruce Almighty, Shall We Dance?, The Ice Cream Truck
Lisa Ann Walter plays Melissa Schemmenti, a veteran second-grade teacher at Abbott known for her bluntness, temper and mysterious network of connections. Whether the school needs new supplies or someone needs a favor, Melissa usually knows a guy who knows a guy, though it’s usually better not to ask too many questions.
Like Barbara, Melissa is a longtime teacher and a realist who has learned not to expect much help from the school district. She is often skeptical of the ambitious ideas proposed by younger teachers like Janine and Jacob, preferring practical solutions and the experience she has gained from years in the classroom. She is also incredibly stubborn and isn’t quick to forget when someone gets on her bad side.
Underneath her tough exterior, Melissa cares deeply about her students and loved ones. She is especially close with Barbara, and the two frequently spend time together both inside and outside of school.
Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill
Known from: Looking, Twinless, The Night Of, Before I Go, In the Dark
Chris Perfetti plays Jacob Hill, an enthusiastic and socially awkward history teacher. Jacob is incredibly passionate about this job, but he often tries a little too hard to connect with his students, earning him the nickname “Mr. C,” short for “Mr. Corny.”
Jacob is outspoken about his beliefs and enthusiastic about social causes, frequently bringing up his volunteer work, community involvement and efforts to support marginalized groups. His eagerness and tendency to overshare can sometimes be a bit much for the people around him, making him a frequent target for jokes from both his students and coworkers. Jacob rarely takes the teasing personally, however, and often considers it a form of bonding.
William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson
Known from: Snowpiercer, Swagger, Ray Donovan, Adopt a Highway
William Stanford Davis plays Mr. Johnson, Abbott Elementary’s eccentric janitor and occasional substitute teacher. While keeping the school clean and running is technically his job, Mr. Johnson regularly finds himself involved in whatever is happening around Abbott, whether anyone asked for his help or not.
Mr. Johnson has a story, theory or unusual solution for just about every situation. He frequently makes bizarre claims about his past, leaving his coworkers to decide how much of what he says is actually true. He is also surprisingly resourceful, often revealing a random skill or piece of knowledge that proves useful when the school runs into a problem.
Katy Mixon Greer (NEW)
Known from: Mike & Molly, Hell or High Water, Four Christmases, Eastbound & Down
Katy Mixon Greer joins Abbott Elementary Season 6 as a new teacher arriving at Abbott following the closure of several schools in the district. The new teacher moves into Melissa’s former classroom, and unsurprisingly it doesn’t take long for the two to clash.
The Season 6 trailer shows Greer’s character confidently standing her ground against Melissa, including a disagreement over who gets to claim a particular chair. With Melissa now serving as a union representative, the arrival of another strong-willed teacher could give her plenty to deal with as Abbott adjusts to its newly expanded staff.
Mixon Greer’s character won’t be the only new teacher joining Abbott in Season 6, with several other new faces expected to arrive at the school. Additional details about the newcomers, including their names and who will play them, have not yet been revealed.
