How to Watch ‘The Conjuring’ Movies in Order

The Conjuring universe burst into the public sphere with the release of 2013’s The Conjuring, and the franchise has been running strong ever since. With the imminent release of the final installment, The Conjuring: Last Rites, it’s never been a better time to binge through the entire series to get up to speed.

There are two ways to watch The Conjuring movies in order: by release date, or chronologically in order of story events. Our recommendation is to watch the series the way theatergoers did: in order of release. That’s because this approach avoids some big-time spoilers that you’d end up getting if you watch in chronological order, which places some of the newer movies before the older ones.

Whichever path you choose, here’s how to watch all the films in order.

‘The Conjuring’ Movies Chronological Order

Here’s how to watch all of The Conjuring movies in chronological order:

‘The Nun’ (2018)

The Nun

Set in Romania in 1952, The Nun serves as the origin story for one of The Conjuring’s most infamous villains: the demonic nun Valak, who becomes the Warrens’ arch-nemesis in later films. In this film, two investigators from The Vatican, Father Burke and Sister Irene, battle Valak to prevent her from breaking out into the mortal world.

‘Annabelle: Creation’ (2017)

Annabelle: Creation

Like The Nun, Annabelle: Creation explores the origins of another of the franchises’ antagonists, the evil doll Annabelle. The film follows a dollmaker and his wife in the 1950s who are grieving the loss of their child. Their efforts to reconnect with the child ends up opening up one of their dolls to demonic possession, and the doll terrorizes a group of young orphans that the couple take in.

Annabelle the doll first shows up in the original The Conjuring as one of the items in the Warren’s artifact room, and she wreaks havoc on their household in Annabelle Comes Home.

‘The Nun II’ (2023)

Four years after the events of The Nun, the direct sequel follows Sister Irene as she investigates as series of murders across Europe, suspecting that each is related to another attempt by Valak to break free. Irene again battles the demon, whose power and influence have only grown.

‘Annabelle’ (2014)

Annabelle

Annabelle was the franchise’s first introduction to the horrific porcelain namesake of the film. The film follows a couple in the 1960s who are expecting their first child. The husband gifts Annabelle to his wife for their daughter’s nursery. When they are attacked in their home by members of a satanic cult, the doll becomes possessed with an evil entity and terrorizes the couple. They reach out to the Warrens for help, and Annabelle ends up in secured their artifact room.

‘The Conjuring’ (2013)

The Conjuring

The film that started it all, we are introduced to paranormal investigators Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) as they investigate their most famous real-life case, the haunting of the Perron family in their Rhode Island farmhouse. The couple discovers that a witch who sacrificed her infant child and herself to Satan placed a curse on the house and surrounding land, forcing them to commission an exorcism as they confront vicious attacks from the witch’s spirit.

‘Annabelle Comes Home’ (2019)

Annabelle Comes Home

The plot of the third Annabelle movie, Annabelle Comes Home, plays out exactly as it sounds: Annabelle, brought home by the Warrens for safeguarding in their artifact room, escapes and releases numerous other dangerous entities kept in the room. The cadre of demonic spirits then terrorize their daughter, Judy, and her babysitters.

‘The Curse of La Llorona’ (2019)

The Curse of La Llorona

The Curse of La Llorona isn’t an official spin-off of The Conjuring movies, but it does take place within the same universe. It follows a social worker named Anna in Mexico as she confronts an evil spirit known as La Llorona, or The Weeping Woman, as it attempts to abduct and murder her children. It ties into the universe through an appearance by Father Perez from the Annabelle films.

‘The Conjuring 2’ (2016)

The Conjuring 2

The Conjuring 2 follows the Warrens to England, where they investigate another of their most famous cases: the haunting of the Hodgson family. As they work to unravel the case, they encounter Valak, the demon nun from The Nun movies, coming into direct conflict with her as she targets the couple in addition to the Hodgsons. This film also features the Warrens investigating one of the most famous haunted houses in history, the Amityville house.

‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’ (2021)

The Conjuring The Devil Made Me Do It

The third film in the mainline Conjuring saga, The Devil Made Me Do It follows the Warrens investigating a satanic cult and is based on a real 1981 criminal case that was the first to ever see the concept of demonic possession used as a defense in court.

‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ (2025)

The upcoming fourth mainline Conjuring film is set for release on September 5, 2025, and though details on the plot are sparse, it will be the final film in the franchise and is expected to take place after The Devil Made Me Do It.
