‘The Amazing Race’ Episode 6 Preview
Heading into Episode 6, eight teams remain and the season’s opening gimmick runs out of time. Every team started the race holding an Express Pass with a deadline of Leg 6 to use it, and Leg 6 is finally here. Two are still unspent, held by Michelle and Matthew Patterson and Conner Wilson and Garrett McGuire. It’s use them or lose them this week.
Michelle and Matthew are on a two-leg winning streak, and with a fresh set of enemies. They reached both Driver’s Seats in Albania, which allowed them to dictate the difficulty of the challenge for each team, and used them to load up the teams they considered threats. Whether that catches up with them depends on how much the remaining teams are still willing to help each other.

Episode 5 Recap
Leg 5 took the nine remaining teams from Morocco to Tirana, the first time The Amazing Race has visited Albania and the ninety-ninth country in the show’s history. Teams drove themselves, which turned navigation into the leg’s biggest obstacle.
It also did something the show has never done: two Driver’s Seat advantages in a single leg, both of which went to the same team.
The Roadblocks
The first Roadblock, “Who’s ready to crush this Roadblock?”, was at a farm in Mullet. One team member worked a hand-cranked grape crusher to produce the thick pulp used to make raki, Albania’s national liquor. The Driver’s Seat let the team that arrived first decide whether each team produced 50, 75 or 100 pounds.
Michelle and Matthew Patterson got there first by driving straight off from the airport while everyone else was still asking for directions. They gave themselves, Erin and Javi, and Ann-Marie and Riley the 50-pound minimum, and handed out the heavier loads elsewhere.
The second Roadblock, “Who wants to roll it out?”, was at the culinary institute, where one member rolled out byrek, a traditional Albanian pastry. For the first time in the show’s history there was a second Driver’s Seat on the same leg, and Michelle and Matthew reached it first as well. They took the single eight-pastry spot for themselves and split the rest between 12 and 16.
The Final Task
The last stop was Bunk’Art 1, one of the roughly 100,000 concrete bunkers built across Albania and never used, since repurposed into cafes, galleries and museums. Teams searched a maze of 100 rooms for a flagged one, listened to a recorded message, transcribed it, then took every seventh word to decode the location of the Pit Stop.
Michelle and Matthew won the leg, their second in a row. Daisha and Dalton came in second.
Elimination – Episode 5
Dafina and Saran Dunmore were eliminated in ninth, the fifth team out. The sisters had recovered from a slow start and left the bunker in a reasonable position, then took the wrong direction on the way to the Pit Stop.
That mistake saved Erin Taylor and Javi Vintimilla, who had a poor leg of their own and struggled badly at the pastry Roadblock. They reached Phil Keoghan in eighth, just one place and a wrong turn clear of going home.

What is ‘The Amazing Race’ About?
Hosted by Phil Keoghan, The Amazing Race sends teams of two with a pre-existing relationship on a race around the world. Each leg has them follow clues between countries, choose between two Detour tasks and send one member into a Roadblock, then sprint for the Pit Stop mat. The last team to check in on most legs is eliminated, and the first team to reach the finish line wins $1 million.
Season 39 marks the show’s twenty-fifth anniversary and sends 13 teams across five continents and nine countries, covering roughly 25,000 miles over twelve legs that begin in Vancouver. It also carries a first for the series: every team started the race holding an Express Pass, good for skipping one task, which has to be used by the end of Leg 6.
