‘The Amazing Race’ Episode 5 Preview

Heading into Episode 5, nine teams remain and the race finally leaves Morocco. Leg 5 runs to Albania, a country The Amazing Race has never visited in 39 seasons.

The Driver’s Seat advantage returns this episode. The twist gives one team the power to hand out advantages and penalties to everyone else. It’s a valuable position to be in, giving a team some control over the game, but handing out a penalty to the wrong team could come back to bite them later.

Four Express Passes are still unspent, held by Ali and Joanna, Ann-Marie and Riley Tejcek, Conner and Garrett and Michelle and Matthew, and they expire at the end of Leg 6. That leaves two legs to use them. The Roadside Assistance is gone, spent by Dafina and Saran Dunmore in the Marrakech Scramble.

What Happened on ‘The Amazing Race’ Last Week?

Need a refresher? Here’s what happened in Episode 4 of The Amazing Race.

Season 29, Episode 4 Recap

The previous episode had ended with Leg 3 unfinished and two teams in a footrace to find Phil at the Pit Stop.

Jody Rebhun and Jenn Naso reached the mat seconds behind Doug and Dylan Matter and were eliminated in eleventh. Naso had lost more than two hours at the pottery Roadblock in Marrakech, and the pair spent the rest of the leg closing a gap that turned out to be a few seconds too wide.

Teams then started Leg 4 two minutes apart regardless of where they had finished, so Doug and Dylan went from almost out to only 18 minutes behind the leaders.

The Moroccan Scramble

Leg 4 introduced the Scramble, new to the series. Each team got 100 dirham and a staggered start from 2pm, then had to complete three tasks scattered across the medina of Marrakech in whatever order they liked, on foot. Each task handed over one third of the final clue, so none could be skipped. The first stop was Bab ad-Debbagh Gate and the Sidi Yacoub Tannery to find out where the three tasks were.

Slipper Search had one member of each team searching through thousands of slippers for a matching pair. Another task, Dye ’n Dry, put them to work dyeing wool and waiting for it to dry. The third, Rug Run, meant carrying a large Moroccan rug across the medina to Bazaar Café and laying it out on the rooftop.

Every team went for the slippers first, which created a bottleneck. Dafina and Saran Dunmore spent their Roadside Assistance there so both sisters could search at once rather than one working alone. Some players found their slippers on the first or second try, while others spent significantly more time searching through the masses.

The alliances shaped the rest of it. Ali Krieger and Joanna Lohman agreed to work with Conner Wilson and Garrett McGuire going forward. Ann-Marie and Riley Tejcek teamed up with Anuar Tager and Andrea Tager Ballesca on the grounds that both are parent-and-child teams, and Anuar and Andrea passed them tips on the wool while their own batch dried.

Elimination

Michelle and Matthew Patterson won the leg. Doug and Dylan Matter checked in ninth after lagging behind for much of the leg.

Cody Langlois and Jaime Tribo came in last and were eliminated in tenth, after getting lost in the maze of markets during the final stretch. It was a surprise since the siblings had been in the top half for most of the season.

What is ‘The Amazing Race’ About?

Hosted by Phil Keoghan, The Amazing Race sends teams of two with a pre-existing relationship on a race around the world. Each leg has them follow clues between countries, choose between two Detour tasks and send one member into a Roadblock, then sprint for the Pit Stop mat. The last team to check in on most legs is eliminated, and the first team to reach the finish line wins $1 million.

Season 39 marks the show’s twenty-fifth anniversary and sends 13 teams across five continents and nine countries, covering roughly 25,000 miles over twelve legs that begin in Vancouver. It also carries a first for the series: every team started the race holding an Express Pass, good for skipping one task, which has to be used by the end of Leg 6.
