‘The Amazing Race’ Episode 3 Preview
Heading into Episode 3, 11 teams remain and the race leaves Europe for Africa. Leg 3 runs from Spain into Morocco, and the episode title, “This Is Sick and Twisted,” suggests at least one task nobody enjoyed.
The Express Pass is the thing to watch. Every team began the season with one, and all of them expire at the end of Leg 6, which means the window is closing fast. Four have been spent across the first two legs, and the teams still holding theirs now have four legs to find the right moment.

Episode Recap
Phil Keoghan started the season by handing out 13 Express Passes at once, one to every team, with a deadline of Leg 6 to use them. In a format where a single Express Pass is normally a prize worth racing for, giving everyone one at the starting line changed the strategy of the first two legs completely.
There was one major catch: only one team could use its Express Pass to skip each task. That meant teams had to decide not only when they needed the advantage, but whether to use their pass before another team claimed that task first. Teams near the back of the pack had the most incentive to use theirs, especially if skipping a task could keep them from finishing last.
Leg 1: Vancouver
The teams set off from Jack Poole Plaza and raced just over a mile to BC Place, where the first Roadblock sent one member of each team 300 feet up to the stadium catwalk. They had to leap from the rafters wearing oversized bear claws and catch a hanging salmon on the way down.
Erin Taylor and Javi Vintimilla arrived twelfth and spent their Express Pass on the very first task of the season, skipping the jump entirely. It was the boldest call of the night and it paid off, shooting them to the front of the pack. Zach and Nate Johnson, who had chosen to run the opening mile rather than take a cab, then got lost on the way to the water taxi and were last into the Detour.
The Detour offered Run It Up or Paddle It Out. Run It Up asked teams to memorize 25 maritime signal flags and their meanings, then hoist the correct five in the correct order within two minutes after a captain read those meanings aloud. Paddle It Out sent them into the bay in a tandem outrigger canoe to collect a clue from one of six buoys.
Doug and Dylan Matter, ninth into the Detour, used their pass to skip Paddle It Out. Dafina and Saran Dunmore had agreed to work with Daisha and Dalton on Run It Up, then used their own pass once they realized Zach and Nate might claim it first. Erin and Javi won the leg, and their prize was a trip to Istanbul and Cappadocia.
Leg 2: Spain
An early start put all twelve remaining teams on the same flight from Vancouver to Madrid, wiping out any advantage carried over from Leg 1. The flight produced an alliance among the women’s teams, which collapsed almost as soon as they landed.
The Roadblock, “Who’s feeling saucy?”, was a switchback to Season 10: La Tomatina. One member of each team had to dig through a mountain of rotten tomatoes for one holding their clue, while locals pelted them with tomatoes the entire time. Approaches varied wildly, from sifting methodically to swimming through the pile.
The Detour provided the options Slice of Ham or Slice of History. Slice of Ham had teams collect a leg of jamón and deliver it to Perro Paco Restaurant, where one member carved 50 grams to standard while their partner built a charcuterie board. Slice of History sent teams to a museum to place photographs of historical figures in the correct spots based on living statues who gave them clues.
Three more Express Passes went here. Daisha and Dalton gave up on the tomatoes and used theirs at the Roadblock. Cody Langlois and Jaime Tribo used theirs at the Detour rather than wait for a free table at the ham shop. Jenn Naso insisted on using hers at Slice of History over Jody Rebhun’s objection. Rebhun, being a European history teacher, thought they could place the photographs quickly but was overruled by her partner. Katie and Charlotte Schultz then arrived at the Detour wanting to use theirs and were refused.
Ali Krieger and Joanna Lohman won the leg and a trip to Hobart, Australia. Michelle and Matthew Patterson took second on the strength of Matthew’s childhood history knowledge.
Eliminations
Zach and Nate Johnson went out first, finishing thirteenth. The brothers from Dallas were left paddling for the final spot against Daisha Wilks and Dalton Hamby after their Express Pass was refused, and Daisha and Dalton reached the mat ahead of them.
Katie and Charlotte Schultz were eliminated at the end of Leg 2 in twelfth, the last team to check in at the Madrid Pit Stop.

What is ‘The Amazing Race’ About?
Hosted by Phil Keoghan, The Amazing Race sends teams of two with a pre-existing relationship on a race around the world. Each leg has them follow clues between countries, choose between two Detour tasks and send one member into a Roadblock, then sprint for the Pit Stop mat. The last team to check in on most legs is eliminated, and the first team to reach the finish line wins $1 million.
Season 39 marks the show’s twenty-fifth anniversary and sends 13 teams across five continents and nine countries, covering roughly 25,000 miles over twelve legs that begin in Vancouver. It also carries a first for the series: every team started the race holding an Express Pass, good for skipping one task, which has to be used by the end of Leg 6.
