‘The Amazing Race’ Episode 7 Preview

Episode 7, “The Amazing Nightmare,” takes the race to Sri Lanka, the season’s first stop in Asia, where a live Double U-Turn vote shakes up the order. A U-Turn forces a team to complete both options of a Detour, and a Double U-Turn applies that punishment to two teams.

Heading into Episode 7, eight teams remain and none of them holds an Express Pass. The last two were spent in Albania by Michelle and Matthew Patterson and Conner Wilson and Garrett McGuire. Doug and Dylan Matter finished last on a non-elimination leg and will face a penalty at the beginning of this leg.

Michelle and Matthew are on a three-leg winning streak and used the Driver’s Seat against several rivals in Leg 5. Those decisions may catch up to them soon as the entire cast votes on the Double U-Turn.

What Happened on ‘The Amazing Race’ Last Week?

Need a refresher? Here’s what happened in Episode 6 of The Amazing Race.

‘The Amazing Race’ Episode 6 Recap

Leg 6 kept the eight remaining teams in Albania and added an Intersection, which paired every team with another for the Roadblock. The pairings: Michelle and Matthew with Daisha and Dalton, Conner and Garrett with Anuar Tager and Andrea Tager Ballesca, Ann-Marie and Riley Tejcek with Ali Krieger and Joanna Lohman, Doug and Dylan Matter with Erin Taylor and Javi Vintimilla.

Anuar and Andrea teamed up with Conner and Garrett in part to try to get back at Michelle and Matthew, who had loaded Anuar and Andrea with the heavier tasks through the Driver’s Seat in Leg 5. Ann-Marie and Riley and Ali and Joanna, the last two all-women teams, had agreed to keep working together. Many of the teams then went to a hotel near the airport instead of the resort where the Intersection was waiting, and lost time before they found the right place.

Michelle and Matthew had told Anuar and Andrea earlier in the leg that they had already spent their Express Pass. They had not. They used it at the Detour on the way to a third straight win.

‘The Amazing Race’ Episode 6 Roadblock and Detour

The Intersection Roadblock asked one member of each paired team to learn and perform a traditional Albanian dance together. Once the pair’s performance was approved, the Intersection ended and each team raced on alone. Michelle and Daisha cleared it first and were gone by the time the rest of the field arrived.

The Detour, “Heads or Tails,” sent teams to a cathedral in Tirana. In Heads, teams made a qeleshe, the traditional Albanian felt cap, by working soap and water into wool to fill the holes in the felt, then stretching it over a wooden mold into a cone. In Tails, teams memorized a poem honoring the Albanian hero Skanderbeg and recited it in both Albanian and English.

Michelle and Matthew chose Heads and used their Express Pass to skip it. Conner and Garrett used theirs on Tails, since the Express Passes all expired at the end of this leg. Daisha and Dalton, who had already spent theirs, worked through Tails and passed after several failed attempts. The two all-women teams stayed together on Heads, along with Doug and Dylan.

‘The Amazing Race’ Episode 6 Leg Results

Michelle and Matthew checked in first at the Pit Stop at the Mother Albania statue in the National Martyrs’ Cemetery of Albania, their third leg win in a row.

Doug and Dylan arrived last, but no team was eliminated. Leg 6 was the first non-elimination leg of the season, and Doug and Dylan will serve a penalty in the next leg.

The episode ended in Sri Lanka, where teams met Phil Keoghan on a beach and learned they were about to take part in a live Double U-Turn vote. The next episode will reveal the outcome of that vote.

What is ‘The Amazing Race’ About?

Hosted by Phil Keoghan, The Amazing Race sends teams of two with a pre-existing relationship on a race around the world. Each leg has them follow clues between countries, choose between two Detour tasks and send one member into a Roadblock, then sprint for the Pit Stop mat. The last team to check in on most legs is eliminated, and the first team to reach the finish line wins $1 million.

Season 39 marks the show’s twenty-fifth anniversary and sends 13 teams across five continents and nine countries, covering roughly 25,000 miles over twelve legs that begin in Vancouver. It also carries a first for the series: every team started the race holding an Express Pass, good for skipping one task, which had to be used by the end of Leg 6.
