Minnesota Timberwolves at San Antonio Spurs — Game 1 Preview

The San Antonio Spurs (62-20) had the best record in the Western Conference this season, and Victor Wembanyama has been the most dominant player in the league — averaging 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.1 blocks per game during the regular season. Minnesota (49-33) advanced through the first round and now walks into Frost Bank Center facing a Spurs team that averaged 34 points against the Wolves in the regular season. Anthony Edwards is listed as questionable with a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise, which would significantly change what Minnesota can throw at San Antonio offensively. If Edwards is limited, Rudy Gobert’s interior presence and defensive effort become even more important for keeping the Timberwolves competitive in what could become a punishing series on the boards.

This is Game 1 of the series.

Players to Watch: Minnesota Timberwolves vs. San Antonio Spurs

Minnesota Timberwolves

Anthony Edwards — Guard. Edwards is questionable with a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise, and his status looms over everything Minnesota wants to do offensively. When healthy, he averaged 28.8 points per game in the regular season and is the Timberwolves’ primary creator and closer — without him at full capacity, San Antonio’s defensive assignments become easier and Minnesota’s margin for error shrinks considerably.

Rudy Gobert — Center. Gobert averaged 11.5 rebounds per game this season and has been the anchor of Minnesota’s defensive identity for years. Against Wembanyama, he will face the most unique matchup he’s encountered in the playoffs — a center who can score from anywhere on the floor and protect the rim as well as anyone in the league. How Gobert manages that challenge will shape the entire series.

San Antonio Spurs

Victor Wembanyama — Center. Wembanyama averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.1 blocks per game this season and averaged 34 points against Minnesota in the regular season. There is no clean defensive answer for a 7-foot-4 center who can shoot off the dribble, finish through contact and alter shots on the other end. Game 1 will show how aggressively Minnesota is willing to foul him and whether Gobert can stay out of foul trouble while trying to slow him down.

What is the Minnesota Timberwolves vs. San Antonio Spurs Series Record?

This is Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals between the Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs enter as the West’s top seed after a 62-20 regular season, while Minnesota (49-33) advanced through the first round to earn this matchup.
