Minnesota Twins (41-46) at Houston Astros (43-45) — Game Preview

The Minnesota Twins (41-46) and Houston Astros (43-45) meet tonight at Daikin Park in Houston, two clubs below even in the standings with a lot of ground to make up in the AL Central.

The Astros come in with a slight edge in team home runs — 116 against the Twins’ 107 — while Minnesota carries a slightly higher team batting average at .247 compared to Houston’s .241. On the Houston side, Yordan Alvarez continues to be the undeniable center of the offense, hitting .314 with 26 home runs and 60 RBIs, numbers that place him among the AL’s most productive hitters this season; Byron Buxton brings a complementary power threat for Minnesota, with 25 home runs and a .573 slugging percentage despite appearing in just 73 games.

The Twins’ Josh Bell has quietly produced 54 RBIs as the lineup’s most consistent run-producer, while Houston’s Christian Walker adds to the Astros’ punch at first base with 19 home runs and 56 RBIs of his own. Both teams enter July needing wins — Houston sits 2 games back in the AL Central division and 9 games back of the AL leader, while Minnesota is 5.5 back in the division — with the trade deadline approaching and roster decisions looming for both front offices.

Players to Watch: Minnesota Twins vs. Houston Astros

Minnesota Twins

Byron Buxton — CF. Buxton is the Twins’ most dangerous hitter this season, posting 25 home runs and a .573 slugging percentage across 73 games despite managing a day-to-day right hip issue. His .325 on-base percentage and .898 OPS reflect the kind of impact he delivers when healthy, making him the biggest variable in Minnesota’s offensive ceiling.

Josh Bell — DH. Bell has been the steadiest presence in the Twins’ lineup, driving in 54 runs while hitting .243 on the season. His .405 slugging percentage and .299 on-base percentage reflect a patient, gap-to-gap approach that has kept him as one of the team’s primary run-producing anchors in the middle of the order.

Brooks Lee — SS. Lee has developed into a genuine power-contact combination at shortstop, hitting .251 with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs through 83 games. His .442 slugging percentage suggests he’s producing extra-base damage well beyond what his batting average alone would indicate.

Houston Astros

Yordan Alvarez — DH. Few hitters in the American League are putting up a more complete offensive line right now — Alvarez is hitting .314 with 26 home runs and 60 RBIs, backed by a .428 on-base percentage and a .618 slugging percentage. Those numbers place him firmly in the AL MVP conversation, and tonight he represents the single biggest threat in the Houston lineup against a Twins pitching staff allowing 4.87 runs per nine innings.

Christian Walker — 1B. Walker arrived in Houston and has held up as one of the lineup’s most dependable power sources, contributing 19 home runs and 56 RBIs while hitting .238. His .469 slugging percentage and .309 on-base percentage represent a .778 OPS at first base that gives the Astros consistent production even in a lineup that has lost key contributors to injury.

Isaac Paredes — 3B. Paredes rounds out the Houston infield as a disciplined, patient hitter who reaches base at a .345 clip. His 11 home runs and 45 RBIs through 81 games reflect steady production rather than explosive bursts, and his .418 slugging percentage signals that he can hurt opponents with runners on base.
