Detroit Tigers (38-49) at Texas Rangers (44-43) — Game Preview

The Detroit Tigers arrive at Globe Life Field at 38-49, facing a Rangers club sitting at 44-43 and holding a firm grip on first place in the AL West. Texas has hit for a .244 team average with 92 home runs on the season, while Detroit checks in at .235 as a team and leads them in home runs with 101 — power that has kept the Tigers competitive in games despite an offense that has otherwise struggled.

Dillon Dingler has been the most dangerous bat in the Detroit lineup, hitting .267 with 19 home runs and 59 RBIs at catcher, while Riley Greene brings a different dimension as the table-setter, posting a .285 average with a .376 on-base percentage and .446 slugging at left field. On the Texas side, Josh Jung has been the anchor at third base, batting .294 with a .357 OBP and .443 slugging percentage, giving the Rangers a reliable force at the top of the order.

Joc Pederson has provided the home run pop in the designated hitter spot with 14 on the year, while Jake Burger has put up 52 RBIs at first base to pace the Rangers’ run production. Detroit has lost key pieces to injury — Javier Baez, Gleyber Torres and Wenceel Perez among them — leaving the Tigers reliant on a young core to stay in games against a Rangers squad playing at home.

Players to Watch: Detroit Tigers vs. Texas Rangers

Detroit Tigers

Dillon Dingler — C. The Tigers’ primary power threat behind the plate, Dingler is hitting .267 with 19 home runs and 59 RBIs through 80 games this season. His .530 slugging percentage reflects how consistently he does damage in the middle of the Detroit order, and his .328 OBP keeps him from becoming a pure all-or-nothing hitter.

Riley Greene — LF. Greene has built his season around contact and reach, batting .285 from the left-field spot with a .376 OBP that makes him one of the Tigers’ most reliable baserunners. His .446 slugging percentage shows genuine extra-base ability to go with the average, giving Detroit a balanced threat at the top of the lineup.

Colt Keith — 3B. Keith has appeared in 78 games at third base and is hitting .249 with 5 home runs and 18 RBIs, a modest but steady contribution in the bottom third of a Detroit order that has leaned heavily on Dingler and Greene to supply the offense. His .369 slugging percentage and .293 OBP reflect a player still developing his approach against major-league pitching.

Texas Rangers

Josh Jung — 3B. Jung has been one of the steadiest bats in the Texas lineup this season, hitting .294 at third base with a .357 OBP and .443 slugging percentage. The combination of contact and gap power makes him a difficult at-bat in the middle of the Rangers’ order every night.

Jake Burger — 1B. Burger leads the Rangers with 52 RBIs, hitting .250 with 14 home runs at first base. The counting stats tell the story — he gets runners in, and the Rangers have built their lineup around that kind of production in the middle of the order.

Joc Pederson — DH. Pederson brings 14 home runs and 31 RBIs to the designated hitter spot, where Texas has used him as a left-handed power option. His .240 average is workable given the home run production, and he gives the Rangers lineup another long-ball threat alongside Burger.
