‘Dancing with the Stars’ Week 7 Preview

Heading into Week 7, 10 couples are still in, but two of them won’t be by the end of the night. Nobody went home on Dedication Night, so Horror Movie Night carries a double elimination, so last week’s scores and votes will carry over to this week.

Ballroom legend Shirley Ballas joins the judging panel, bringing the night’s scoring to a 40-point scale. Her appearance adds an interesting family dynamic, as her son Mark Ballas is competing alongside Maura Higgins. But given Shirley’s reputation as a strict, no-nonsense judge, viewers shouldn’t expect her to go easy on her son.

Val Chmerkovskiy is also back after serving a one-week suspension, reunited with Jenna Dewan for an Argentine tango. Dewan scored 37 without him, her best score of the season, which has not gone unremarked on.

This week the iconic Halloween episode returns. Every routine is inspired by a horror film. Here’s the full Week 7 lineup of songs and dances:

What Happened on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Last Week?

Need a refresher? Here’s what happened in Week 6 of Dancing with the Stars.

Episode 6 Recap

Week 6 was Dedication Night, with each of the 10 couples honoring someone who shaped their life. Two-time Mirrorball champion Kym Johnson guest judged, which put scoring on a 40-point scale.

It was the night the 10 paddles finally came out. Ezra Frech and Daniella Karagach opened the show with a contemporary for his mother Bahar and took the season’s first 10. Amber Glenn and Pasha Pashkov then beat it with two 10s for a contemporary dedicated to her sister Brooke.

Val Chmerkovskiy sat the episode out, suspended for a social media post aimed at Carrie Ann Inaba after she called out an illegal lift by his wife, pro Jenna Johnson. He deleted it and apologized, and BBC Studios, which produces the show, benched him for a week. Alan Bersten, out of the competition since Giada De Laurentiis went home in Week 2, stepped in with Jenna Dewan.

Episode 6 Dances and Scores

With Kym Johnson on the panel, scoring was out of 40. The Week 6 leaderboard:

Couple Dance Song Score
Amber Glenn and Pasha Pashkov Contemporary “Breathe Me”, Sia 38
Ezra Frech and Daniella Karagach Contemporary “Bloodline”, Mon Rovia 37
Jenna Dewan and Alan Bersten Viennese waltz “Unchained Melody”, The Righteous Brothers 37
Harry Shum Jr. and Jenna Johnson Foxtrot “Stop This Train”, John Mayer 36
Julia Stiles and Ezra Sosa Contemporary “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, Frankie Valli 36
Maura Higgins and Mark Ballas Paso doble “I’m Shipping Up to Boston”, Dropkick Murphys 35

Connor Wood and Rylee Arnold Viennese waltz “Piano Man”, Billy Joel 32
Tyler Cameron and Sharna Burgess Contemporary “Supermarket Flowers”, Ed Sheeran 32

Elimination

Nobody went home. Alfonso Ribeiro announced at the end of the night that none of the 10 couples would be eliminated, which the show has done on Dedication Night before.

But no couple should get too comfortable. Two couples go out on Horror Movie Night instead, and the scores and votes from Dedication Night carry into that result, so last week’s results still matter.

What is ‘Dancing with the Stars’ About?

Dancing with the Stars pairs a celebrity with a professional ballroom dancer and gives them one week to build a routine for live television. Three judges score the dance, and the audience votes on their favorite. The two different scores are combined, and the couple with the lowest score goes home. By the finale, only the top pairings remain, with the winning couple taking home the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.

Season 35 brought sixteen new couples into the ballroom, tying Seasons 9 and 31 for the largest cast in the show’s history. Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough return as hosts and Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli return to the judges’ table.
