Detroit Tigers (19-24) at New York Mets (17-25) — Game Preview

Two teams playing under their preseason expectations meet at Citi Field with the losing-record problem hanging over both dugouts. Detroit hands the ball to Keider Montero, who has been quietly excellent at a 3.18 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP over his first eight starts. The Mets counter with Nolan McLean, the most promising arm on a thinning rotation, who has piled up 57 strikeouts in 45.1 innings to go with a 2.78 ERA. Riley Greene continues to carry the Tigers offense, slashing .325/.419/.487, while the Mets are trying to generate more consistent offense while Francisco Lindor remains on the injured list. The Mets are looking to complete the sweep, while the Tigers are trying to avoid leaving Queens without a win.

Players to Watch: Detroit Tigers vs. New York Mets

Detroit Tigers

Riley Greene — LF. Hitting .325 with a .419 OBP and a .487 slug. Greene has been the most consistent bat in the Tigers’ lineup, and his ability to grind out at-bats against a strikeout pitcher like McLean is the swing factor for Detroit’s offense today.

Keider Montero — SP. Today’s starter has a 3.18 ERA and an outstanding 0.96 WHIP across 39.2 innings. He doesn’t pile up strikeouts, but he limits hard contact, which travels well at Citi Field.

New York Mets

Clay Holmes — SP. Owns a 1.86 ERA with 37 strikeouts and a 4-win line. The conversion from late-inning reliever to full-time starter has gone better than even the Mets front office hoped.

Mark Vientos — 1B. Five home runs and 17 RBI to go with a .241 average. The power isn’t quite where it was last year, but Vientos remains the right-handed bat the Mets count on most against soft-tossing righties.
