Uzbekistan (0-0-2) vs. DR Congo (0-1-1) — Group K Match Preview

Uzbekistan and DR Congo close out Group K at Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta, two nations chasing a first win at a World Cup that has so far gone against them. Uzbekistan sit bottom on 0 points and have conceded 8 goals across their two matches, while DR Congo have 1 point and a tighter back line that has shipped just 2, leaving both needing a result to cling to the faintest knockout hopes. Uzbekistan are here on debut as the first Central Asian nation ever to reach a World Cup, coached by Fabio Cannavaro, the 2006 World Cup-winning captain and Ballon d’Or winner now charged with steering them through it. Their captain Eldor Shomurodov is the country’s all-time top scorer with 43 goals and arrives off a season of 22 goals in the Turkish Super Lig, which makes him the clear focal point of the attack.

DR Congo, playing their first World Cup since 1974, when they appeared as Zaire and became the first sub-Saharan African team at the tournament, are still chasing a first-ever World Cup win after losing all three that year. Captain Chancel Mbemba, a defender with a record 107 caps, leads a side that qualified the hard way, edging Jamaica on Axel Tuanzebe’s 100th-minute goal in an intercontinental playoff. With both short on points, the night becomes a contest of firsts as much as a fight for a slim path forward.

Players to Watch: Uzbekistan vs. DR Congo

Uzbekistan

Eldor Shomurodov — Forward. Uzbekistan’s captain and all-time leading scorer with 43 goals carried that form into Europe, netting 22 goals in the Turkish Super Lig this season with Istanbul Basaksehir off 95 shots. On a team still finding its feet at this level, he is the one player capable of turning a half-chance into the country’s first World Cup goal of note.

Abbosbek Fayzullaev — Midfielder. The creative hub of the side, Fayzullaev produced 3 goals and 3 assists across 14 Super Lig starts this season and is the player tasked with feeding Shomurodov. His ability to find pockets between the lines is Uzbekistan’s most reliable route to building an attack rather than relying on long balls.

Abdukodir Khusanov — Defender. The first Uzbek to play in the Premier League, the Manchester City centre-back is the cornerstone of a defence that has leaked 8 goals so far and badly needs to tighten up. How he copes with DR Congo’s forwards will go a long way toward deciding whether Uzbekistan can finally keep a clean sheet.

DR Congo

Yoane Wissa — Forward. The Newcastle forward is DR Congo’s most proven goal threat, having contributed 1 goal and 1 assist across 4 Premier League starts this season. With his side yet to find their scoring touch, his movement and finishing carry the best hope of a breakthrough.

Chancel Mbemba — Defender. DR Congo’s captain holds a national record with 107 caps and organises a back line that has conceded just 2 goals, the foundation of everything the team does well. His leadership has rarely mattered more than in a match his side must win to keep advancing.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka — Defender. The West Ham right back, who switched allegiance from England to DR Congo, brought 2 assists from 23 Premier League starts this season and offers a genuine overlapping threat down the right. His pace recovering in defence is just as valuable against an Uzbekistan side that will push numbers forward.
