Connecticut Sun (1-5) at Seattle Storm (1-4) — Game Preview

Two teams still searching for footing meet in Seattle as the 1-5 Connecticut Sun visit the 1-4 Storm at Climate Pledge Arena. Connecticut has been the better team on the glass through six games, pulling down 34.0 rebounds per night against Seattle’s 30.2, and that gap on the boards may be where the visitors find their edge. Aneesah Morrow has been the engine of that rebounding advantage, averaging 9.7 boards per game to go with 12.0 points, which makes the Sun forward a tough cover for any frontline she meets.

On the Seattle side, Jade Melbourne is shooting 53.1% from the floor while carrying the offense with 13.0 points and 4.2 assists a night, the kind of dual-threat line a young guard rarely strings together this early in her career. Behind her, Natisha Hiedeman is putting up 12.2 points and 3.6 assists in 26.2 minutes, giving the Storm a steady second creator who can swing possessions. The Storm’s frontcourt is thinned out by injuries, so the matchup between Morrow and whoever Seattle slides over could decide which way this one tips.

Players to Watch: Connecticut Sun vs. Seattle Storm

Connecticut Sun

Aneesah Morrow — F. Morrow is averaging 12.0 points and a robust 9.7 rebounds per game, and the second number tells you where she lives, on the offensive glass and in traffic. She splits that rebounding work 7.0 defensive to 2.7 offensive, which means roughly a third of her boards come on the attacking end, the kind of split that creates second-chance points all night. Her 41.2% from the floor and 62.5% at the line suggest she’s still finding her shooting rhythm, but on the boards she’s already producing at a number any starting forward in the league would take.

Saniya Rivers — G. Rivers runs the Sun’s offense for 24.2 minutes a night, averaging 4.8 assists with a tidy 1.8 turnovers, an assist-to-turnover ratio north of two-and-a-half that points to a guard who is making sound decisions inside heavy responsibility. That kind of distribution number puts her at the heart of the team’s halfcourt setup. The challenge against Seattle is finding clean angles when the Storm collapse on penetration, but Rivers’ steady hand has been one of the few constants in Connecticut’s early-season ledger.

Aaliyah Edwards — F. Edwards is shooting an efficient 56.5% from the field and putting up 10.0 points in 20.3 minutes, the kind of per-minute production that hints at a bigger role if the Sun lean into her finishing. She’s also automatic from the stripe at 80.0%, so fouling her late offers no escape. Her 3.0 rebounds a night is modest by raw count, but tied to her minutes, she’s a useful frontcourt complement to Morrow when the Sun go to a heavier lineup.

Seattle Storm

Jade Melbourne — G. The Storm’s young guard is one of Seattle’s top scorers at 13.0 points per game while shooting 53.1% from the field and 81.8% from the line, a pair of percentages most veteran guards in the league would be glad to claim. She’s also averaging 4.2 assists in 25.6 minutes, which makes her the closest thing Seattle has to a primary creator on most possessions. Her 2.4 turnovers per game is the trade-off for a heavy on-ball load, but the shooting numbers more than cover it.

Flau’jae Johnson — G. Johnson has been Seattle’s best rebounder among the guards at 4.6 boards a game, with the breakdown weighted defensively at 3.8 to 0.8 on the offensive end. That defensive-glass work matters for a Storm team giving up size in spots, since every secured rebound is a possession Seattle doesn’t have to scramble to defend. She profiles as the kind of two-way wing whose value shows up in possessions earned, not always in the box score.

Natisha Hiedeman — G. Hiedeman pours in 12.2 points and 3.6 assists across 26.2 minutes, the second-leading scorer on the roster and a willing secondary playmaker when Melbourne sits or gets blitzed. Her 1.8 turnovers a night against those 3.6 assists give her a healthy two-to-one ratio, useful for a guard asked to make decisions in pick-and-roll. Her 40.7% from the floor leaves room to grow, but the volume scoring keeps Seattle’s perimeter honest on most possessions.
