Sweden (1-0-0) vs. Netherlands (0-1-0) — Group F Match Preview

Sweden arrive at Houston Stadium in Houston off an opening win in Group F while Netherlands, three-time World Cup runners-up in 1974, 1978 and 2010, were held to a draw in their first match and now sit on a single point. The contrast in pedigree is sharp, with Ronald Koeman’s side carrying the weight of a nation still chasing a first title and Graham Potter’s Sweden back at a World Cup for the first time since 2018. Up front Sweden lean on Viktor Gyokeres, who scored 14 goals in 26 starts in the Premier League this season for Arsenal, and Alexander Isak, who added 3 goals across 8 starts for Liverpool. Netherlands answer through Cody Gakpo, the Liverpool winger who produced 7 goals and 5 assists in 32 league starts, with Frenkie de Jong pulling the strings in midfield after a 5-assist season at Barcelona. At the back Virgil van Dijk anchors a Dutch defense built around the captain, who managed 6 goals from center-back across 38 league starts. The two nations last met in 2018 World Cup qualifying, a 2-0 result, and Sweden carry recent momentum after wins over Ukraine and Poland in the spring. A second straight result would put either side in strong position to advance from Group F.

Players to Watch: Sweden vs. Netherlands

Sweden

Viktor Gyokeres — Striker. Gyokeres comes in as Sweden’s most reliable finisher, having scored 14 goals with 1 assist in 26 starts for Arsenal in the Premier League this season. He fired 55 shots across that campaign, a volume that points to a striker who hunts chances rather than waits for them. That output makes him the natural focal point of Potter’s attack in Houston.

Alexander Isak — Striker. Pairing with Gyokeres, Isak brings a different profile, registering 3 goals and 1 assist in 8 Premier League starts for Liverpool this season. His 17 shots in that stretch show a forward still finding rhythm but capable of stretching a back line with his movement. Together the two give Sweden a front line few opponents will relish facing.

Yasin Ayari — Midfielder. Ayari gave Sweden a major lift in the opener, scoring twice in the 5-1 win over Tunisia. His ability to step forward from midfield gives Potter another scoring option behind the Gyokeres-Isak partnership.

Netherlands

Cody Gakpo — Winger. Gakpo had a productive club season, contributing 7 goals and 5 assists in 32 league starts for Liverpool, and his 87 shots underline how often he gets into dangerous areas. He can operate off either flank or through the middle, which gives Koeman flexibility in how he attacks Sweden. Expect him to test the Swedish full-backs early.

Frenkie de Jong — Midfielder. The Barcelona orchestrator dictates the rhythm of the Dutch side, posting 1 goal and 5 assists across 16 LA LIGA starts this season. His ability to receive under pressure and break lines makes him the engine of Netherlands’ build-up. If he controls the center of the pitch, the Dutch will dominate the ball.

Virgil van Dijk — Center-back. The captain leads from the back, having scored 6 goals in 38 Premier League starts for Liverpool this season, a remarkable return for a defender largely off set pieces. His reading of the game and aerial command anchor a Dutch defense that will look to silence Sweden’s twin strikers. He remains the spine around which Koeman builds.
