Saudi Arabia (0-1-0) vs. Spain (0-1-0) — Group H Match Preview

Saudi Arabia and Spain both arrive in Atlanta on a single point, each drawn in its Group H opener at Atlanta Stadium, which leaves this match with real weight already in the second round of fixtures.

Spain enters as the 2010 world champions and the reigning European champions from Euro 2024, yet they were held 0-0 by Cape Verde to open the group. Saudi Arabia, making a 7th World Cup appearance and a 3rd in a row, lean on captain Salem Al-Dawsari, the winger who scored 8 goals and added 8 assists in the 2025-26 Saudi Pro League and who memorably struck the winner against Argentina in 2022.

Spain answers with 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, whose 16 goals and 11 assists in LALIGA this season make him the central threat from the right. In midfield Spain can call on Rodri, the Ballon d’Or winner, while Saudi Arabia counter through Firas Al-Buraikan, their qualifying top scorer, leading a squad that is almost entirely home-based under coach Georgios Donis.

With both sides chasing a first win, three more points here would go a long way toward the knockout rounds in a group where neither team has yet found its rhythm.

Players to Watch: Saudi Arabia vs. Spain

Saudi Arabia

Salem Al-Dawsari — Winger. The captain and creative engine, Al-Dawsari posted 8 goals and 8 assists for Al Hilal across 22 starts in the 2025-26 Saudi Pro League. His 54 shots this season point to a player who shoulders much of the attacking load, and he remains the name Saudi fans remember for the winner against Argentina in 2022.

Firas Al-Buraikan — Striker. The Al Ahli forward led Saudi Arabia for goals through qualifying, earning him the central role up front. He gives Donis a focal point to play off Al-Dawsari’s service from the flank.

Saud Abdulhamid — Right back. The only Europe-based member of the squad, Abdulhamid contributed 1 goal and 3 assists in 6 starts in the 2025-26 Coupe de France with Lens. His 8 shots from defense reflect a full back who pushes forward to support the attack down the right.

Spain

Lamine Yamal — Winger. At 18, Yamal is already Spain’s headline attacker, producing 16 goals and 11 assists for Barcelona across 26 starts in LALIGA this season. He fired 117 shots over the campaign, more than any other player in this match, and his ability to cut inside off the right makes him the player Saudi Arabia must contain.

Pedri — Midfielder. Barcelona’s conductor sets Spain’s tempo, adding 2 goals and 9 assists from central midfield in 23 LALIGA starts this season. His passing range links defense to Yamal and Nico Williams on the wings.

Rodri — Midfielder. The Manchester City anchor and Ballon d’Or winner brings control to the base of Spain’s midfield, logging 17 Premier League starts this season with 1 goal among his 16 shots. He shields the back line and recycles possession to keep Spain on the front foot.
