Players to Watch: Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Chicago Cubs

Ian Happ — LF. Happ provides the Cubs’ most consistent home-run threat with 10 long balls and 21 RBIs, even with the average sitting at .212. The slugging profile matters more than the contact rate for a corner outfielder asked to drive the ball, and Happ’s 10 home runs lead the Cubs’ eligible bats in this matchup.

Alex Bregman — 3B. Bregman has been the contact anchor of the Cubs’ lineup, hitting .259 with a .343 on-base percentage from the hot corner. His .356 slugging mark is modest by his career standards, but the on-base ability gives Chicago a reliable table-setter in the heart of the order.

Jameson Taillon — SP. Taillon makes the start for Chicago at 2-4 with a 5.20 ERA, 47 strikeouts and a 1.27 WHIP across 55.1 innings. The WHIP suggests he has avoided constant traffic, but the run prevention has lagged, making this a key road start for the Cubs’ rotation.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Nick Gonzales — 3B. Gonzales paces Pittsburgh in batting average at .304, the best mark among either side’s eligible hitters, and his .359 on-base percentage keeps the lineup turning over. The .354 slugging tells a more contact-oriented story than a power one, but for a Pirates club still building its run-scoring profile, a reliable bat at the corner is the kind of foundation they have been looking for.

Oneil Cruz — CF. Cruz brings the run production from center field with 35 RBIs and 11 home runs while hitting .265 on the year. His power and speed make him one of Pittsburgh’s highest-impact bats, and his RBI total leads all eligible hitters in this matchup.

Bubba Chandler — SP. Chandler takes the ball for the Pirates with a 4.60 ERA and a 1-6 record across 47.0 innings. The 47 strikeouts hint at swing-and-miss stuff, but the 1.47 WHIP points to a young arm still working through traffic on the bases, and tonight is another step in that development against a Chicago lineup that has been quiet at .236 as a team.
