Atlanta Dream (4-2) at Portland Fire (5-3) — Game Preview

The Atlanta Dream travel west to face the Portland Fire at Moda Center, with the Fire entering at 5-3 and the visiting Dream at 4-2 after a strong opening run for both clubs. The expansion-year story is doing the real heavy lifting here, because Portland sits a half-game ahead of an Atlanta team that retooled hard over the winter and is now leaning on Allisha Gray, who is averaging 21.7 points per game on 46.9 percent shooting to anchor the visiting offense. Across from her, Carla Leite has emerged as the Fire’s offensive engine at 16.3 points and 4.0 assists per game while shooting a remarkable 94.7 percent from the free-throw line. Angel Reese gives the Dream an interior identity Portland will have to scheme around, with the forward pulling down 10.8 rebounds a night including a league-relevant 5.5 offensive boards. The Fire counter with Emily Engstler, whose 2.3 blocks per game lead the franchise and give a young roster a defensive backbone it can build the night around.

Players to Watch: Atlanta Dream vs. Portland Fire

Atlanta Dream

Allisha Gray — G. The Dream’s leading scorer is putting up 21.7 points per game on 46.9 percent from the floor, a rare combination of volume and efficiency at the guard spot. Her 81.8 percent clip from the free-throw line keeps Atlanta dangerous in any close fourth quarter, and she is the player Portland’s perimeter defenders will need to load up on early.

Jordin Canada — G. Canada runs the show at 6.8 assists per game across 30.3 minutes a night, the kind of usage that tells you everything about Atlanta’s faith in her decision-making. The 2.2 turnovers per game keep the assist-to-turnover ratio comfortably north of three, which is why the Dream offense can survive the occasional Gray cold stretch without unraveling.

Angel Reese — F. Now in her first season in Atlanta after the offseason move from Chicago, Reese is averaging 10.8 rebounds per game with a near-even split of 5.3 defensive and 5.5 offensive boards. That offensive rebounding rate matters here, because Portland’s frontcourt is young and Reese’s second-chance work could decide possessions in the half-court.

Portland Fire

Carla Leite — G. The Fire’s primary scorer-distributor is averaging 16.3 points and 4.0 assists in just 22.5 minutes per game, a per-minute rate any expansion team would take. What really stands out is her 94.7 percent clip from the free-throw line, which gives Portland a reliable closer at the stripe even though she is still learning to manage the 3.2 turnovers per game that come with the ball-handling load.

Emily Engstler — F. Engstler is the defensive anchor of the Fire’s rotation, leading the team with 2.3 blocks per game and chipping in 1.4 steals across 23.0 minutes a night. Offensively she has been a useful release valve, knocking down 39.1 percent of her threes while contributing 8.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

Luisa Geiselsoder — C. The German center has started every game for Portland, averaging 6.0 points and 3.9 rebounds across 22.4 minutes per game. She is a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line this season, which is a small sample but a useful indicator of poise when the Fire need a frontcourt body who will not panic under pressure.
