Players to Watch: LA Angels vs. Boston Red Sox

LA Angels

Mike Trout — CF. Trout brings a .243 average and a .376 on-base percentage into tonight’s game, giving the Angels a source of plate discipline even as the rest of the lineup has struggled to find consistency. His .423 slugging mark rounds out a complete offensive line that has kept him productive even as the Angels play out a lost season.

Zach Neto — SS. At shortstop, Neto has emerged as the Angels’ primary power threat with 23 home runs and 67 RBIs this season. His .236 average trails Trout’s .243 mark but the RBI total shows he has driven in runs at a steady clip even as Los Angeles has fallen out of contention.

Vaughn Grissom — 2B. Second baseman Vaughn Grissom has quietly put together a .244 average with 59 RBIs, giving the Angels lineup a steady presence in the middle infield. His .306 on-base percentage and .384 slugging mark round out a solid all-around season for a player still building his everyday role.

Boston Red Sox

Wilyer Abreu — RF. A .255 average with 23 home runs and 70 RBIs have made Abreu a steady presence in Boston’s outfield this season. His .461 slugging percentage points to consistent power, and his home run total matches Angels shortstop Zach Neto’s 23, making them the two most prolific power bats on the field tonight.

Jarren Duran — LF. Duran counters with 20 home runs and 69 RBIs of his own, though his .204 average is the lowest of any hitter in tonight’s game. The power numbers still make him a threat at the bottom of Boston’s lineup even in a down year at the plate.

Caleb Durbin — 3B. Over at third base, Durbin has posted a .249 average with 62 RBIs and a .327 on-base percentage, giving Boston a reliable table-setter in front of its power bats. His .382 slugging mark rounds out a complete offensive line from the Red Sox’s everyday third baseman this season.
