Players to Watch: Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves

Washington Nationals

CJ Abrams — SS. Abrams gives Washington a productive left-handed bat near the top of the order, with a strong on-base profile and run-production value from shortstop. His combination of contact and extra-base ability makes him one of the Nationals’ key matchups against Elder.

James Wood — RF. Wood brings the team-leading 13 home runs into the matchup and pairs that with a .254 batting average and 34 RBIs. The right-field bat is the most consistent power source in a Nationals lineup that has hit 61 home runs as a team.

Richard Lovelady — SP. Lovelady is now listed as Washington’s starter, entering at 2-2 with a 2.61 ERA and 20 strikeouts. He gives the Nationals a different look than the originally expected Miles Mikolas, and his ability to limit early traffic will matter against an Atlanta lineup led by Olson.

Atlanta Braves

Matt Olson — 1B. The Braves first baseman has 14 home runs and 42 RBIs with a .274 batting average, leading the lineup in long balls and tying for the team RBI lead. Olson is the most reliable power producer on a club already hitting .266 as a team.

Bryce Elder — SP. Tonight’s probable starter takes the ball at 4-2 with a 2.01 ERA across 62.2 innings, and the supporting numbers back it up — 56 strikeouts and a 0.99 WHIP. Elder has been the steady arm in a rotation that has helped Atlanta to a 3.11 team ERA.
