Kirk Alyn (1910-1999) is an actor best known for being the first to play Superman in a live action production. The Columbia Pictures’ 1948 Superman movie serial consisted of 15 episodes which told Clark Kent’s story from his arrival on Earth to building his relationships with Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen and beyond, all while battling Spider Lady.
In 1950, another live-action movie serial Atom Man vs. Superman was released, featuring Lyle Talbot as Superman’s arch-nemesis Lex Luthor. Alyn’s Superman embodied the heroism of the era, coming off as an earnest yet confident protector with an unwavering sense of justice.
George Reeves (1951–1958)
Superman Roles: Superman and the Mole Men (1951), Adventures of Superman (1952-1958)
George Reeves was the first live-action actor to portray Clark Kent in an ongoing television series role. He starred as the Man of Steel in Adventures of Superman, which ran from 1952 to 1958 and grew out of the film Superman and the Mole Men, which served as an unofficial pilot to the television series. His portrayal of Superman brought a type of calm confidence and quiet authority, leading him to become a role model for 1950s audiences.
Christopher Reeve (1978–1987)
Superman Roles: Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987).
Christopher Reeve became synonymous with the character of Superman in a way that no other actor has been able to replicate. Reeve starred in Superman (1978) directed by Richard Donner. It was the character’s first major big-budget film in modern Hollywood and instantly captured audiences around the world with his charismatic and hopeful portrayal of the Man of Steel. He won a British Academy Film Award for his role, with Gene Hackman serving as Lex Luthor and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane.
Dean Cain (1993–1997)
Superman Roles: Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993–1997)
Between the theatrical run led by Christopher Reeve and the mantle eventually picked up by Henry Cavill came a four-season ABC show: Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Teri Hatcher starred as Lois Lane and John Shea as Lex Luthor. The 88-episode series followed Lois and Clark in their work at the Daily Planet as well as Clark’s weekly adventures saving Metropolis.
Tom Welling (2001–2011)
Superman Roles: Smallville (2001-2011), Crisis on Infinite Earths (2019)
Welling starred as a young Clark Kent growing up in Kansas on the CW show Smallville, which ran for 10 seasons. Kristin Kreuk starred as early love interest Lana Lang before Erica Durance joined as Lois Lane. In the show, Clark Kent befriends Lex Luthor, portrayed by Michael Rosenbaum. The series introduced a completely new chapter of the Superman story and earned the approval of the original Man of Steel himself, Christopher Reeve.
Brandon Routh (2006)
Superman Roles: Superman Returns (2006)
Brandon Routh had the unenviable task of being the first film actor to bring Superman back to a live-action role after the Chris Reeve era. Directed by Bryan Singer, Superman Returns starred Routh alongside Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane and was intended as a symbolic sequel to Superman and Superman II.
Henry Cavill (2013–2023)
Superman Roles: Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017), Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), Black Adam (2022), The Flash (2023)
Henry Cavill ushered in a new era for the Man of Steel, first appearing in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013) produced by Christopher Nolan. Cavill went on to portray Superman throughout the DC Extended Universe, starring alongside Amy Adams as Lois Lane in the feature films and even making a brief return in Black Adam. His portrayal emphasized a more grounded and introspective Clark Kent, exploring the weight of Superman’s immense powers and humanity’s complicated relationship with its greatest hero.
Tyler Hoechlin (2016-2024)
Superman Roles: Supergirl (2016-2019), Arrow (2018-2020), The Flash (2018-2019) Batwoman (2019), Legends of Tomorrow (2020), Superman & Lois (2021-2024)
The success of Smallville was enough for the CW to take a chance on Supergirl, which ran from 2015 to 2021 and starred Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin. The show naturally brought in her more famous familial connection, played by Tyler Hoechlin. His run was so well received that it spawned the spinoff Superman & Lois, with Elizabeth Tulloch starring as Lois Lane. That show took place within the Arrowverse, the overarching television universe created for the CW that included Arrow, Supergirl, Superman & Lois, The Flash and Batwoman.
David Corenswet (2025-Present)
Superman Roles: Superman (2025), Supergirl (2026)
The latest actor to take on the mantle of Clark Kent is David Corenswet, who starred in James Gunn’s Superman with a reprisal in Supergirl and a return slated for a Superman sequel in 2027. Corenswet brought a new and heartfelt take on the character of Kal-El, not least thanks to the addition of Krypto the Superdog. This new portrayal returns to the Man of Steel’s classic roots, balancing power with genuine compassion.
