Senegal (0-0-1) vs. Norway (1-0-0) — Group I Match Preview

Senegal arrive at New York New Jersey Stadium already chasing the group after dropping their Group I opener, while Norway sit top of the table on the back of a win in their first match. The gap in early returns is stark, with Norway’s attack already producing while Senegal go looking for their first points of the tournament. Erling Haaland set the tone for the Norwegians with 2 goals in that opening match, the kind of start that carries a side built on a perfect 8-0-0 qualifying campaign in which it scored 37 goals, eight more than any other European team. Senegal answered the call to attack through Ibrahim Mbaye, who found the net once in their opener, with Iliman Ndiaye chipping in an assist to keep the African side dangerous in the final third. Norway captain Martin Ødegaard pulled the strings from midfield and registered an assist, a reminder that this is a deeper team than the one that last reached a World Cup in 1998 after a 28-year absence. Senegal still carry real pedigree as 2025 AFCON finalists and a side that reached the Round of 16 in both 2002 and 2022, so the result here goes a long way toward deciding who advances out of Group I. The sides have met only once, a 2-1 friendly back in 2006, which leaves this matchup short on history and heavy on stakes.

Players to Watch: Senegal vs. Norway

Senegal

Ibrahim Mbaye — Forward. Mbaye opened his tournament account with 1 goal in Senegal’s first match, giving the side a young attacking spark up top. He leads the Senegalese forwards for early returns and will be central to any push back up the Group I table.

Iliman Ndiaye — Forward. Ndiaye set up a goal with 1 assist in the opener, operating as the creative link between midfield and the front line. His ability to combine in tight spaces makes him Senegal’s most direct route to chances against a Norway side that conceded none in its first match.

Ismaïla Sarr — Forward. Sarr was Senegal’s busiest shooter in the opener, putting up 3 total shots as he looked to stretch the defense from wide. If his finishing sharpens, his shot volume gives Senegal a second scoring threat alongside Mbaye.

Norway

Erling Haaland — Forward. Haaland announced himself with 2 goals in Norway’s opening win, the spearhead of an attack that overwhelmed opponents throughout a flawless qualifying run. He scored both of his goals in a single appearance and stopping him is the central problem Senegal must solve.

Martin Ødegaard — Midfielder. The Norway captain pulled the strings from the center of the park and laid on 1 assist in the opener. Ødegaard’s vision and set-piece delivery turn possession into clear chances, and he is the conductor behind Haaland’s movement.

Leo Østigard — Defender. Østigard chipped in with 1 goal from the back in Norway’s first match, a threat from set pieces to go with his defensive work. His aerial presence at both ends gives Norway an edge in the box that few group rivals can match.
