San Francisco Giants (25-38) at Chicago Cubs (33-30) — Game Preview

The San Francisco Giants visit the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field with the home side carrying the better record at 33-30 against a Giants club sitting at 25-38. Chicago has out-slugged San Francisco in the home-run column, 71 to 58, while the Giants have countered with a higher team batting average at .256 to the Cubs’ .240. The matchup features two established bats with different offensive profiles, with Luis Arraez carrying a .325 average for the Giants and Alex Bregman giving Chicago a veteran presence at third base.

Chicago has the edge in power, while San Francisco has leaned more on contact. Casey Schmitt has supplied much of the Giants’ right-handed pop with 13 home runs and 35 RBIs, while Ian Happ leads the Cubs with 14 home runs and 34 RBIs. Both clubs are working through extended injury lists that have thinned parts of their rosters, which puts more focus on the regulars in Friday’s lineup.

Players to Watch: San Francisco Giants vs. Chicago Cubs

San Francisco Giants

Luis Arraez — 2B. The Giants’ second baseman is hitting .325 as the team’s most reliable contact bat, with an on-base percentage of .364 that puts him at the front of the lineup picture. His slugging mark of .436 is built on doubles and gap-to-gap line drives rather than home-run power, fitting the Arraez profile that has produced batting titles in past seasons.

Casey Schmitt — DH. Schmitt has been San Francisco’s right-handed power source, with 13 home runs and 35 RBIs to go with a .282 average. The combination of average and pop has made him a fixture in the heart of the order, and his RBI total leads the Giants’ position players in the fact sheet for this game.

Chicago Cubs

Alex Bregman — 3B. The Cubs’ third baseman is hitting .255 with a .336 on-base percentage, giving Chicago a veteran bat that can work counts and keep innings moving. His .359 slugging mark is below his career line, but the on-base profile still gives the Cubs a steady presence in the lineup.

Ian Happ — LF. Happ leads the Cubs with 14 home runs and has driven in 34 runs while hitting .237, giving Chicago a switch-hitting power source from left field. His home run total is one ahead of Casey Schmitt’s team-leading 13 for San Francisco, a useful side-by-side as the two power bats square off Friday.

Michael Busch — 1B. Busch tops the Cubs in RBIs with 36, ahead of Happ at 34, while hitting .246 with six home runs. The RBI total reflects a run-producing role in Chicago’s lineup, and his .246 average sits between Bregman’s .255 and Happ’s .237 among the Cubs’ featured bats.
