Pittsburgh Pirates (43-43) at Philadelphia Phillies (48-38) — Game Preview
The Pittsburgh Pirates bring a 43-43 record into Citizens Bank Park tonight to face a Philadelphia Phillies club sitting at 48-38 and 2.5 games back in the NL East. Pittsburgh actually hits better as a team — the Pirates are batting .258 as a club while Philadelphia comes in at .237 — but the Phillies have the edge in home runs, 114 to the Pirates’ 108.
The Pirates’ offensive depth centers on Brandon Lowe, who leads Pittsburgh with 20 home runs and 57 RBIs out of the second base spot, giving the lineup genuine middle-of-the-order punch. On the Phillies side, Kyle Schwarber is the most dangerous power bat in this matchup — 30 home runs and 55 RBIs at the DH spot make him a problem for any opposing staff. Bryan Reynolds provides a counterweight for Pittsburgh: hitting .282 with a .398 on-base percentage and 52 RBIs, he’s the Pirates’ most consistent run producer and a difficult out with his ability to work counts.
Philadelphia’s trade deadline picture looms over the month of July — at 48-38 and within striking distance of the division lead, the Phillies figure to be active buyers, which adds another layer of stakes to every game they play at home this week.

Players to Watch: Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Pittsburgh Pirates
Nick Gonzales — 3B. The Pirates’ contact leader at the hot corner, Gonzales is hitting .294 this season with a .350 on-base percentage and a .368 slugging percentage, giving Pittsburgh a reliable source of hits near the top of the order. That .294 average is among the better marks in the lineup and reflects a hitter who puts the ball in play consistently without chasing outside the zone.
Brandon Lowe — 2B. Lowe sits at 20 home runs and 57 RBIs on the season, making him Pittsburgh’s primary run producer in this lineup. His .239 average keeps him out of the batting-title conversation, but the combination of power and run production at second base gives the Pirates a genuine middle-of-the-order presence.
Bryan Reynolds — LF. Reynolds pairs power with plate discipline better than anyone else in this Pirates lineup — he’s batting .282 with 11 home runs, 52 RBIs, a .398 on-base percentage and a .466 slugging percentage across 86 games. That .398 OBP means Reynolds reaches base at a high clip whether or not he squares one up, and his .466 SLG gives him legitimate extra-base threat on every swing.
Philadelphia Phillies
Brandon Marsh — LF. Marsh leads the Phillies in batting average at .317, and the production behind that number is real — a .348 on-base percentage and .520 slugging percentage add up to a player who both gets on base and does damage when he connects. His .520 SLG ranks as one of the stronger slugging marks on this Phillies roster, giving the lineup a contact bat that also carries extra-base pop.
Kyle Schwarber — DH. Thirty home runs and 55 RBIs through the first half of the season put Schwarber among the NL’s most productive power bats. He’s hitting .256 on the year, but the sheer volume of damage he does — a home run roughly every 15 plate appearances at this pace — makes him the most dangerous individual in the lineup on any given night.
Bryce Harper — 1B. Harper is batting .275 with 20 home runs, 54 RBIs, a .375 on-base percentage and a .533 slugging percentage across all 86 games this season. The .533 SLG is the highest among the three Phillies hitters in tonight’s matchup, and that .375 OBP means opposing pitchers rarely get through an at-bat against him cleanly. His presence in the middle of the Phillies lineup gives Philadelphia a second genuine power threat to pair alongside Schwarber.
