Colorado Rockies (32-49) at Minnesota Twins (38-44) — Game Preview

The Colorado Rockies bring a 32-49 record to Target Field tonight to face a Minnesota Twins club sitting at 38-44, with both teams looking to gain ground in competitive divisional races. Minnesota’s power has been the more decisive offensive weapon so far this season — the Twins have hit 100 home runs as a team while Colorado has connected for 86 — though the Rockies carry a slightly higher team batting average at .254 against the Twins’ .245.

Troy Johnston has been the engine of Colorado’s lineup, hitting .314 with an on-base percentage of .378 and a .442 slugging percentage from his spot in right field, giving the Rockies a legitimate table-setter who makes contact at a rate few teams can match. On the Minnesota side, Byron Buxton has given the Twins a genuine middle-of-the-order force, posting a .270 average with 25 home runs and 41 RBIs to go along with a .585 slugging percentage that underlines his ability to change a game with one swing. Adding to Colorado’s run-production concerns, TJ Rumfield leads the club with 43 RBIs and has chipped in 12 home runs with a .284 batting average, giving the Rockies a legitimate threat in the middle of the order.

The Twins own the pitching edge on paper as well — Minnesota’s staff carries a 4.82 ERA compared to Colorado’s 5.48 — which keeps the home side as the stronger bet to control this game at Target Field.

Colorado Rockies

Troy Johnston — RF. Johnston has been one of the steadiest hitters in the Colorado lineup this season, batting .314 with an on-base percentage of .378 and a .442 slugging percentage from the right field spot. His ability to get on base consistently gives the Rockies the kind of table-setter they need at the top of a struggling order.

Hunter Goodman — C. Goodman is Colorado’s primary power source, having launched 21 home runs while driving in 39 runs with a .239 batting average from behind the plate. The catching position rarely produces that kind of pop, and Goodman has been one of the more productive offensive catchers in the National League this season.

TJ Rumfield — 1B. Rumfield leads the Rockies with 43 RBIs and has supplied 12 home runs while batting .284 this season, making him Colorado’s most consistent run producer in the middle of the lineup. That RBI total and solid average give him a profile that holds up even against a Twins pitching staff that has been sharper than Colorado’s own rotation.

Minnesota Twins

Byron Buxton — CF. Buxton is the central figure in Minnesota’s offense, hitting .270 with 25 home runs and 41 RBIs while producing a .585 slugging percentage that speaks to his ability to do damage at the plate in any count. His .327 on-base percentage rounds out a stat line that makes him a constant threat every time he steps to the dish.

Josh Bell — DH. Bell has been the quiet RBI machine in the Twins’ lineup, leading the club with 49 RBIs despite a .245 batting average and 9 home runs. That gap between his moderate power numbers and his run-production total reflects how frequently he comes to bat with runners on base — and how often he delivers.
