Chicago Cubs (43-37) at New York Mets (34-46) — Game Preview

The Chicago Cubs bring a 43-37 record into Citi Field tonight, where the New York Mets have stumbled to 34-46 on the season. Chicago is hitting .244 as a team with 95 home runs, while the Mets sit at .231 with 90 home runs — a team that has struggled both to put runs on the board and keep them off, posting a 4.22 ERA against the Cubs’ 4.30. Pete Crow-Armstrong has been the engine driving Chicago’s offense, hitting .285 with 17 home runs and 44 RBIs in 80 games from center field, while his .520 slugging percentage reflects just how much damage he can do in any given at-bat.

On the Mets’ side, Juan Soto enters this one hitting .299 with 17 home runs, 38 RBIs and an OPS of .965 across 61 games — a production rate that makes him the most dangerous hitter in this lineup by a considerable margin. Dansby Swanson provides another dimension for the Cubs’ attack; the shortstop is batting .202 but has driven in 46 runs, making him one of Chicago’s most reliable run producers despite the modest average. The Mets have leaned on Bo Bichette for production throughout the lineup, and with a depleted pitching staff on both sides, expect offense to be available tonight at Citi Field.

Players to Watch: Chicago Cubs vs. New York Mets

Chicago Cubs

Pete Crow-Armstrong — CF. Crow-Armstrong is hitting .285 with 17 home runs and 44 RBIs in 80 games, making him the Cubs’ most productive all-around hitter this season. His .366 OBP and .520 slugging percentage give him an OPS of .886 — numbers that hold up against any center fielder in the National League.

Ian Happ — LF. Happ has 16 home runs and 37 RBIs in 76 games, providing consistent power from the left side of the plate despite a .229 batting average. A .339 OBP and .465 slugging percentage round out a profile that makes him a steady run producer even when the average dips.

Dansby Swanson — SS. The shortstop is batting .202, but 46 RBIs in 76 games tells a different story — Swanson has a knack for coming through with runners on base, and his 11 home runs add pop to a spot in the lineup that can go overlooked. His .688 OPS masks a genuine run-producing track record this season.

New York Mets

Juan Soto — LF. Soto is putting together one of the best individual seasons in the Mets’ lineup in years: .299 average, 17 home runs, 38 RBIs and an OPS of .965 in just 61 games. His .395 OBP and .570 slugging percentage make him a threat every time he steps in against opposing pitching, and the Cubs will need to account for him all night.

Bo Bichette — SS. Bichette is batting .254 with 10 home runs and 45 RBIs in 80 games, his RBI total reflecting how often the Mets have relied on him to deliver with runners on base. The .390 slugging percentage is modest, but the production is real — he ranks among the team’s most consistent contributors in a lineup that has needed every run it can manufacture.

Mark Vientos — 1B. Vientos brings 10 home runs and 33 RBIs into this one, hitting .220 with a .399 slugging percentage in 66 games. The .259 OBP limits his on-base impact, but the raw power is still there, and a Vientos home run has a way of changing the complexion of an inning quickly.
