Belgium (0-2-0) vs. New Zealand (0-1-1) — Group G Match Preview
Belgium and New Zealand close out Group G at BC Place Vancouver in a match that has become a sudden-death exercise for Belgium: with two defeats from their first two matches, Rudi Garcia’s side need a win to have any chance of advancing, while New Zealand — the lowest-ranked team in the tournament at 85th — have their first World Cup point already secured from their time at this edition and are in the extraordinary position of knowing a draw could even be enough.
Belgium are fading what the KB describes as a “golden generation,” a collection of talent that produced a third-place finish at Russia 2018 but has never quite delivered the result those players seemed capable of; they qualified for this tournament with a 7-0 rout of Liechtenstein but arrive carrying the expectation of a squad that is running out of World Cup chances. New Zealand’s achievement in just getting here is significant — they qualified via the first-ever guaranteed OFC direct berth, their 3rd tournament appearance and first since 2010, and in that 2010 edition they went unbeaten through three group draws without winning a match.
The sides last met in 2008 Olympic Men’s Soccer, with Belgium winning 1-0. Belgium beat Croatia 2-0 and Tunisia 5-0 in pre-tournament friendlies, while New Zealand beat Chile 4-1 in March before preparing form dipped, losing to Haiti 4-0 and England 1-0 in their final warmups. Kevin De Bruyne, the creative heart of this Belgium side, leads the squad with 9 total shots in this tournament across 2 appearances — a measure of his involvement even as Belgium have failed to convert.

Players to Watch: Belgium vs. New Zealand
Belgium
Kevin De Bruyne — Midfielder. With 9 total shots across 2 tournament appearances — the most of any Belgian player in this group stage — De Bruyne remains the irreplaceable creative force in a Belgian system that simply does not work as well without him. Belgium need a win to survive, which means De Bruyne needs to be at his most aggressive in terms of arriving into positions to shoot and delivering final balls for the forwards.
Youri Tielemans — Midfielder. Tielemans has contributed 4 total shots in 2 tournament appearances and is the player who gives De Bruyne the freedom to operate higher by maintaining Belgium’s shape in transition. His range of passing and his composure under pressure make him the second-most important creative presence in Belgium’s midfield.
Maxim De Cuyper — Defender. The left-sided defender has been Belgium’s most dangerous attacking outlet from the back, registering 5 total shots in 2 appearances — a figure that places him second only to De Bruyne in Belgium’s attacking output for the group stage. His overlapping runs and willingness to arrive in the penalty area give Belgium a threat on the left that New Zealand will need to track carefully.
New Zealand
Elijah Just — Forward. Just has scored 2 goals in 2 tournament appearances — the most productive output from any New Zealand player at this World Cup — making him the unexpected attacking story of the group stage. At the 85th-ranked nation at the tournament, having a forward who can produce two goals in the opening two matches is the kind of contribution that turns stories of participation into stories of achievement.
Chris Wood — Forward. The veteran striker has contributed 2 assists in 2 tournament appearances, which makes him New Zealand’s most creative player by that measure even as Just has done the scoring. Wood’s ability to hold the ball, bring others into play, and create through his physical presence gives New Zealand a front-line partnership with more depth than the 85th ranking suggests.
Finn Surman — Defender. Surman has scored 1 goal in 2 appearances — a remarkable return from a defensive position that reflects New Zealand’s ability to generate threat at set pieces. His contribution alongside Just means New Zealand have two tournament goalscorers from very different positions, and that range is part of what makes them harder to defend than their ranking implies.
