In the midst of a bitter rivalry between railroad mogul Blake Cantrell (Robert Taylor) and stagecoach bigwig Capt. Boss Starkey (Wallace Beery), the latter has been renting spare stagecoaches to a mysterious man named Arnold (Charles Bickford) under the pretense of transporting fugitive slaves north to safety. Unfortunately for all involved, Arnold's real racket is capturing slaves and reselling them, and now Cantrell and Starkey have to team up to stop him.
