Gail Macaulay (Ann Blyth), an average teenager on the eve of her high school graduation, is shattered when her younger sister blurts out the secret she's just discovered: Gail is adopted. Though Gail's loving mother (Jane Wyatt) begs her forgiveness, and her boyfriend, Chuck (Farley Granger), insists that it doesn't matter, Gail turns away from her family and sets out to find her real mother. But when she meets the sheepish woman (Ann Dvorak), their anticipated reunion does not go as planned.
