Widow’s Bay Season 1 Ending Explained & Open Questions

Widow’s Bay is the show of the summer — and potentially the year, if its 19 Emmy nominations are any indication. The Apple TV horror-comedy follows Widow’s Bay Mayor Tom Loftis as he attempts to turn his small-town island off the coast of Massachusetts into the “next Martha’s Vineyard.”

Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Jeff Hiller and Stephen Root formed an electric ensemble while Katie Dippold and Hiro Murai created a singular television aesthetic that stunned audiences and critics alike.

The season finale answered some of the many questions audiences had from earlier in the season but also raised many others about the curse of the island and what it will take to make it disappear forever. We are still months away from Season 2, but fans are already putting together theories about the mysteries of the New England island and the fate of its characters.

Here are the biggest open questions fans have after Season 1 of Widow’s Bay.

Lingering ‘Widow’s Bay’ Questions after Season 1

If you missed Widow’s Bay or want to go back and find some Easter eggs, the hit series is streaming on Apple TV.

Here are the biggest lingering questions heading into season 2. Spoilers ahead!

1. What Is the Door Under the Town Hall?

Tom Loftis in front of Widows Bay Town Hall

The door under Town Hall makes appearances throughout the series. In the flashback episode, Sarah Westcott Warren comes upon it as she tries to escape her new husband. In the season finale, Evan and his friends find it when they go exploring underneath the storm shelter that they’re supposed to not be exploring.

The door seemingly serves as the entryway into the soul of the island, where sacrifices are made. The terrifying chair inside, strapped up and bloodied from centuries of victims, remains unexplained. But the loss of Kenny the janitor in the finale, who is trapped in the room with the door and taken, seemingly quells the storm for the time being.

2. Will Eight People Need to Be Sacrificed?

As was hinted throughout the series, the tolls of the church bell signal the number of sacrifices the island requires. As Tom tosses the family heirloom into the ocean at the end of the season finale, the bell tolls eight times, indicating the island will not relent in its curse until its demands are met.

3. What Will Happen to Evan?

Evan in Widow

It is revealed at the end of the season that Evan is the last descendant of Richard Warren, and thus the last thing the island needs in order for the curse to go away forever. Tom will not let that happen, but it is unclear what the cost of that decision will be.

4. Will Ruth Survive?

Seemingly, Ruth will survive if viewers follow the old literary adage that a character is not dead unless you see them dead. Ruth takes a breath at the end of the finale as the storm subsides, indicating she will live. The question now is how she will feel about Tom, her son-in-law who just attempted to kill her, and Sheriff Bechir, who shot her in the back.

5. What Did Dale See on the Old Video?

Jeff Hiller as Dale in Widows Bay

As much of the town sheltered in place, Dale snuck off to a side room in search of supplies and found old videos there. One was directed at the general public and meant to quell panic. The other was directed at someone in a leadership position who will need to make very difficult decisions about the fate of the island and its citizens.

The fact that Dale screamed out that the place is a death trap suggests what he saw might hold answers to the old door under City Hall.

6. Why Did the Storm Stop in Widow’s Bay?

It is assumed the storm stopped in Widow’s Bay after Kenny was inadvertently sacrificed when Evan and his friends snuck around underneath City Hall during the shelter in place. The island appeared satisfied with the sacrifice for now. But the eight bell tolls at the end of the season finale indicate it is not fully satisfied.

7. What Is the Twist in Widow’s Bay?

Stop reading now if you have not seen the season finale.

The biggest twist in Widow’s Bay is that Tom’s son Evan is the last living descendant of Richard Warren, and thus the one thing keeping the curse of the island alive.

8. Will Widow’s Bay Ever Become a Tourist Hot Spot?

Only time will tell, but if the island town’s first tourist season is any indication, visitors won’t be flocking to Widow’s Bay for the reasons Tom had hoped.
